Hurrah for Beck's new song, 'Hell Yes', a return to his robo-funkin' roots! (I particularly like the Japanese female voice that says 'Please enjoy!' in the chorus.) And hurrah for Mumbleboy's Flash video for it, which looks nice and cheap and inventive, like Beck used to be!

Here's the video:

Hell Yes (Real Player)

Hell Yes (Windows Media Player)

You can still watch Mumbleboy's video for my 2001 song 'Tape Recorder Man' on his site:

Tape Recorder Man (Flash animation)

Actually, if there are any Flash geniuses out there who want to make an animation for a track off my new album for their showreel, speak now!

It would be amazing if enough people volunteered and there was an animation for every track on the album! First takers get the best tracks!

something like a series of monochromatic screen prints fed through flash and manipulated?

I'll even take whatever song is last!

I promice i'll keep the good mistakes only.

BUT...
Holy sh**! Have you heard the new Louis Philippe!?!

No, I'm kidding, I'm sure Louis doesn't promote his work anywhere but on his own Sunshine site (http://www.louisphilippe.co.uk/), and certainly not in disguise. Is the new record good? He said he'd send me one, but I won't hear it until I get back to Berlin.

But the really pressing question is, what do you think of the sound of a Kleenex squeaking against a car window (http://www.artharbour.jp/otoniwashi20050124.html), today's offering on the Lost Radio, Found soundstream? Call it Kleenex Sound System if you like... lovely music, isn't it?

Yeah, but it's the lesser of two rockisms -- his 'Sea Change' period, recording trad. sincere songs with Nigel Godrich, was much more rockist. At least the authenticity of his robo-rap period is robot authenticity. The Golden Age is cybernetic, and whitey tries to moonwalk.

woah....i had no idea mumbleboy made this (it isnt even on his site!). my computer crashed a few days ago so there's no sound but the video is totally awesome! much love for gradients!!!

I downloaded a leak of the album last week. "Hell Yes" is no "This is My Crew" but it's still nice a cozy, esp with all that 'heathen guitar' line. "E-Pro" is rad and "Black Tamborine" has one of the best grooves I've ever heard in a Beck song.

But some of the leaked tracks sound kinda scary...in a bad way. "Summer Girl" or whatever it is, the one that opens with a chiptune intro, reminds me of Sheril Crow which is NOT a good thing. The one that's been going around as "Chain Reaction" feels like 1996 all over again. Which i suppose is a good thing.

still, id rather hear the new momus!

flash animations and especially mumbleboy's work reminds too much me of what we've done in art school in the mid nineties. but that's my personal trauma.
my favorite video clip of last year is Circlesquare's "7 minutes" by Jaron Albertin. you can watch it on the Soft Citizen site (www.softcitizen.com/directors.php?director=Jaron%20Albertin). it really gets under your skin.
i am no particular flash aficionado but i would be very very tempted to make a clip for one of the new tracks by other means (e.g. i still have some super 8 reels that are over expiry date... ;)
probably i get something done until your return to berlin.
what do you think?

Poem for Momus

From: (Anonymous)
Fragment (Design as Religion)

Technical magical procedure from around the world:
Turn things around and inside-out.
Hold your penis while swearing a promise,
You can't be damaged by such magic.
It is bad to meet a wedding procession
But good to dream a funeral.
What is bad is good.
"We didn't... I mean... I don't
Suppose anyone knew that, did they?"
In Iran they pour perfume over the left hand,
Recite a short prayer, and ask a little fee.

Never light a candle in the day.

Awaking/dreaming
That which sees the sleeper,
"The dreaming soul is absent from the body",
Yeah, right
Yeah
And if you dream a dead relative...
If you dream a dead relative...
Go by the stars,
The first ploughing begins in October,
Go by the stars
And hide your bread beneath the harness.

"In the name of God, and we trust in God,
We will take refuge with God, against Satan, the rebel."

Be sure to eat with others present
After a May/June slaughter of the sheep.
Vegetable gardens must not be entered by women.

To cause rain:
Frighten animals into urinating and
Dunk holy men into the sea.
Make a woman weep.
Sacrifice popsicles to hot water demons.
Incant: "Make yourself naked, O fog,
Or else I will make myself naked."
The village people love this;
They love to hear about how
They will receive blessings for their virtue.
God's determination of things works
In a currency beyond the modernist;
Such is the fate of the careless thinkers
Who guide their lives by a guess.

How to place magical bundles here and there,
When you only have one?
Mystics who stumble around crying
Confessions of faith
- "they are like dead men who can move".
Cultivate elaborate chanting, beat small drums,
Dance to the strength test:
The rolling in thorns and the taking of weights.
Mysticism versus Rationalism.
If you miss a prayer,
You don't have to repeat it later.
Love and beauty.
The Same-forever.
The Teacher,
The pupil,
The line by line echo.

Hi Eric! Yes, that Jaron Albertin piece is very strong. It's digital effects like morphing and blurring made on digital video, right? Powerful stuff (and I like the track too).

The Super 8 thing sounds great, do you have a track in mind? I'll pencil you in and we can explore the idea more back in Berlin, ne?

I feeling frustrated. I make motion graphics for a living, but these days one job it's just not enough so I managed to get two or three extras for my once spare time.
I just don't have the time, but I'd really really really like to do something. I haven't heard the album yet and I don't think I can put something together before some months. I always had the idea to make something out of a momus' song, though I'm more appealed by the older ones.
anyways, my university once gave me the opportunity to make motion graphics on music. three pieces on 'bucephalus bouncing ball' by aphex twin (ok, ok... I chose the song), and here's the results (there were some limitations: each of the three videos must feature a main element: geomatry, typography and organic shapes - guess what was my organic shape):
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/steamingpile/
So, with an enormous amount of time and patience and waiting, I would be more than happy to work on a song (maybe not strictly in flash - I became a motion blur junkie).

But how do people hit you after 6+ records?I wonder. It's impossible not to know them well. And even if you weren't listening all the time, people don't get younger either. I still love Beck and Bjork and the Beastie Boys even if they begin to resemble the Rolling stones.
