Never mind all the theory, I hear you saying, what's happening with Topo the rabbit? Find out with the Rabbitcam (Quicktime movie, 3.1MB, 3:12). If you're lucky you may see Topo attempting to drink without getting water up his nose, or chasing his favourite pair of blue socks around the room.

For more animal mysteries, check out this BBC Radio documentary about a strange motif -- an eternal ring of three interlocking hares with just three ears between them. The BBC explains: "The symbol appears in a carving in the roof of a medieval Devon church, but the hare-chasers trace its origins through medieval Europe; via an ancient casket said to have contained the bones of St Lazarus, a 13th century monastery bell, and a Chapter house roof where the hares are found rubbing shoulders with the pagan Green Man; all the way to the mountain Kingdom of Ladakh and 12th Century China." Very Wicker Man...

That rabbit is so adorable. I showed the movie to my fiancée, and now she wants to get a rabbit. The only problem is that we have seven cats, so I'm not sure if adding a rabbit to the mix would be a good idea.

Marvelous program.

The symbol itself brings to mind the arms of the Isle of Man:

Most animals seem to have a symbolic history. I've often found it odd that the adorable hedgehog was associated with theivery, using its spines to impale farmer's grapes to feed its young. Weasels were said to concieve through their ears and give birth through their mouths.

Dear Momus,

I would love to kiss your ass all day long. Oh wait, I can because I am a useless wastrel with nothing better to do!

Yours,

Lord Whimsy.

...and pray tell: what does this make you, [livejournal.com profile] lucanus_cervus?

I know who you are because you neglected to hide your identity on one of the multiple times you'd sent the versions of your oh-so-carefully-crafted little 'anonymous' message. It seems you've put an awful lot of thought into this for someone who has better things to do.

I don't engage in fights I've already won.

Way to go, Momo and Topo. Did you ask Topo what he thinks of those three bunnies?

Maybe it's bunny culture.

nice vid'.

there is music: in the first section the sounds of tapping the glass, little thuds, zoom in/out camers hum & ami yoshida-snuffles all sound just like an improved music from japan or erstwhile cd.

I was going to make just the same point myself. My ears have been changed forever by the Hokkaido experience. There is already so much music in everything, even before we hire the composer. Most documentaries would be much better with the "music" produced by their sound recordists rather than the dire composers or stock music they bring in. American documentaries are the worst -- intrusive music fills every possible space, just to erase anxiety and ambivalence (science themes, after all, are full of potential for these emotions). The BBC is now following the American model, hoping to sell their documentaries to the world. I saw a doc. last night on BBC World about "The Memory of Water" (it was about homeopathy, and the attempts to substantiate it in studies) which had the worst use of music ever, bits of crummy drum'n'bass spliced into every quiet moment for spurious "impact". Scientist focuses his microscope: CUE D'N'B! Animation of water molecules: CUE D'N'B!

why does the house of momus have no over head lights?

I decided (http://www.imomus.com/dailyphoto291202.html) a couple of years ago that fluorescent light was the perfect light. It renders colour better, and when you put it near to the ground it gives this dramatic effect all through the house, like futuristic utility lighting. There's nothing more depressing to me than a room lit by a single overhead filament bulb. I love neon's mysterious throbbing, I love it when tubes flicker. Also, German apartments come totally bare, people even take the light fittings with them when they leave. So if you're lazy (and a bit scared of fiddling with naked wires) you put all the lamps down at floor level, near the sockets.

would it not poo everwhere, or pee in corners?

Rabbits make very clean poo and pee. In fact, they eat their own pellets so that they can digest the food twice! They tend to gnaw cables, though, and strip the wallpaper off with their teeth. Ours isn't yet house-trained, and needs a lot of supervision when it's roaming free.

how smart are rabbits?

I always thought of them as incredibly stupid, compared to, say, cats. I still think they are, but ours makes up for it with a very comical personality.

Do you know, do rabbits and cats generally get along? Or is it the case where it only works when they've grown up together?

In general, I would keep the two separate: last summer, I saw a local cat make away with a screaming baby rabbit in its mouth. Very upsetting.

Thanks to shuffle mode I now know that Rabbitcam makes a great video for Edie's Brickell's Love Like We Do, but I have to point out that rabbits aren't rodents, they're lagomorphs - different teeth or something...

though i suspect you live with the same problem as i do - not being able to leave any drink unattended for even seconds. The cat likes to stick her pink nose into anything, and if she's being really bad her paws go in and she paints on the floor with the water / whatever it is
