Scotch up yer iPod ya schemey wee radge!

Momus wanders around his home city of Edinburgh, Scotland waffling about bagpipes, heads on stakes, a painting called 'Bling Bling', the new parliament building, sheep and ghost droppings, and how he once stuck his tongue, for erotic thrills, into an Oxfam worker's tea. Finally he asks his mother to rebirth him and she says no.

I liked the interplay of dialogue between you and your companion. It seemed like something out of a movie, almost, with the background noise of busy townspeople milling about adding a realistic ambience.

please tell me you'll have a small gig somewhere in the burgh before leaving!

Rebirthing sounds fun. Kind of like that scene in Blue Velvet between Dennis Hopper and Isabella Rossellini.

Great photo, that. I'm looking forward to seeing Edinburgh with my own eyes next summer.

Also: why don't you have a Scottish accent, if you're indeed more Scottish than you are British?

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2004-12-29 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 100% Scottish, but my accent is subtle. My dad's a linguist and my mum's a snob and they both wanted to get rid of their local accents. We travelled a lot too.

Burke and Hare

(Anonymous) 2004-12-29 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I see my city as Belfast, although I'm from Larne, a place where west-coast Scots have absconded to (Burke and Hare are, ironically enough, buried there). My friend Stephie (fringe over eyes, Butthole Surfers t-shirt on backwards) now works as chief Edinburgh environmental health officer. Often stoned on Arthur's Seat, he contemplates and curses rule-breaking waste-sacks propped outside off-Royal Mile restaurants. Guardian reader, natch.

Well, nice to know you were here. I'll listen to the audio when I have time - I hope it was positive.

Aberdeen, Japan

Is the factoid about Aberdeen, Japan true? I searched Google and Wikipedia for clues to it, but was unable to find any.

Arthur's Seat?

[identity profile] qualities.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
big cliff/hilltop overlooking edinburgh. very scenic and pleasant and nice. i think this is true.

[identity profile] missstephanie.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
It is. My flat was right next to it. I'm getting all nostalgic.

[identity profile] qualities.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
only visited it once or twice, but i feel the same way.

[identity profile] missstephanie.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It has that effect on you. It sucks you in. I'd trade Massachusetts for Edinburgh any day of the week.

[identity profile] qualities.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
id trade it for massachusetts any day of the week save for friday and saturday - ive never seen more people more drunk people being drunk in one place. edinburgh is the only place i ever saw someone walk along and then vomit without breaking stride; without even slowing down. ive never seen that. ive never seen that before. ive never seen someone just turn their head and vomit and keep walking to the next pub. ive never seen that before.

[identity profile] missstephanie.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I just chased by a drunk man. I saw a guy flat out punch his wife on North Bridge. A street brawl was expected. It's sort of like that any night of the week. If you're over on Lothian Rd on a Friday or Saturday night when the clubs get out, you're in for a treat though.

[identity profile] serenchwilen.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Was a great listen. Thanks.

You almost have a Tony Blair Scots accent. Hee hee.
My grandfather had the thickest Glasgow brogue up until the day he died and he had lived in the U.S. since he was 16. He stubbornly held onto that accent to the very end. The funny thing is he taught English and choir at a private school in New Jersey. His students could barely understand him. I would have loved to have sat in on one of his classes.

I went back and listened to XTC's Apple Venus vol. 1 and noticed the Wicker Man references that appear masked as pastoral pleasantries. A surprising discovery because I had no knowledge of the Wicker Man film when the album first came out.

I never got much of a Wicker Man feeling from your and Laplantine's Summerisle work. I never got to the bottom of that album. I need to go back to it.

My name is Leith like your river and seaport.

DSL=Damn Slow Loading

[identity profile] tump.livejournal.com 2004-12-30 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
How would sending it to your gmail address facilitate obtaining the file?

When you get back from China, the link here should still be good, just go into the imomus "Calendar" link and click 12/29.

I meant if anyone has the file downloaded. I'm in China 'til next July, so you see..if anyone sends it to me, I'll give them a gmail account, if they don't already have one, those these have become tenapenny these days I've noticed.

[identity profile] tump.livejournal.com 2004-12-31 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand is why you seem to think that downloading an attachment from web-based google mail will be any easier than downloading the link here; connectivity speed is the same.

Re: DSL=Damn Slow Loading

(Anonymous) 2004-12-31 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Allow me to clarify. For some reason this link is particularly slow, it starts at 1kbs or whatever and before too long it just cuts off. When I download things I've been sent via gmail I don't have such a problem, ie. it's slow but not nearly that slow.

Re: DSL=Damn Slow Loading

[identity profile] tump.livejournal.com 2004-12-31 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. In that case it's more likely a router issue between your ISP's network and the server where the file resides. Anyway, now that I understand the issue, I'll email you the file...it will arrive by google mail so don't bother with the invite!

Liked the use of the word thrawn, but surely it should have been, ya radge wee schemey. Is the Rezillos Cant Stand My Baby the only pop song that contains the word radge?

Hi, just wanted to show the Christmas present I gave to a friend, a Momus teddy; he's adopted you as his new pet.

Greetings.

in photos, you have a cut and paste quality, a tremendous feeling of not belonging in any surrounding. it is similar to those gnome photos. but those have a home in a garden somewhere, and perhaps it is the same with you. edinburgh is your 'home' but is there some place in which you feel like you most belong, a place made from the same stuff as yourself, a place where you might take a photo of yourself and look natural? that photo would really be something.

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2005-01-05 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)

Alas, I cannot go back to nature now. I fear it's too late to belong anywhere. The best I can do is enjoy not belonging, like my old hero 'the most important man alive', who wrote:

Back to nature, the voyeur will realise
That this is not a sight for his sore eyes

Back to nature
I don't know where to start
Back to nature
I don't have that kind of heart

...I couldn't act naturally if I wanted to

How fascinating to hear your accent and your anecdotes about familiar places! Your mother reminded me vividly of the Edinburgh ladies my Gran knew. Interesting to hear that you went to Edinbugh Academy too. Being a state-schooled Glasgow gal myself, all the big Edinburgh private schools have always held a certain unattainable fascination for me, or more specifically what kind of people emerge from them.

Also made me realise British I am, in that I couldn't help myself piecing together voices, places, opinions etc to place you on some sort of class spectrum in my head.. But very enjoyable, thank you.
