Oh, a nice selection indeed. Devendra didn't do anything for me, but I read that Arto will invite him to Brazil so he'll shape up in time for 2005.
A real late addition on my list would be Louis Philippes (http://www.louisphilippe.co.uk) new album. Just a prime example of fine art listening and excellent pop! Technically it'll be out in 2005.
Wonderkids of 2004 were Ariel Pink (featured song: For Kate I wait (http://www.paw-tracks.com/arielpink.mp3)) and Khonnor (featured song: Megan's Present)

Looking forward to Otto Spooky and the "Moral Values tour" of the U.S. ;)

This one (http://www.louisphilippe.co.uk/sounds/Louis%20Philippe%20-%20The%20Wonder%20of%20it%20All%20Demo.mp3) sounds more Gilbert O'Sullivan.

I thought you didn't like Devendra Banhart.

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2004-12-23 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My initial reaction was 'too Marc Bolan' (http://www.livejournal.com/users/imomus/2004/01/22/). Then after that I was making fun of the authenticity discourse Michael Gira was heaping on him. But Devendra can't be blamed for that. When I heard his music being used in a dance piece by Christoph Winkler (http://www.livejournal.com/users/imomus/68782.html) recently I thought it sounded great.

twins are still around?
i did enjoy their vampire martial arts movie though.

Guess Twins are not that faboulous german synth-pop duo who did masterpieces as 'Face to face Heart to Heart' and 'Ballet dancer' ;)

Our end of year playlists have some common records...but isn't Anne's record on Emphase?

Actually, I did miss a couple. Electrosold Collectif's Radio Panik Sessions (http://www.sonig.com/main/spl/bio.php) (basically a Scratch Pet Land record) -- sleeve art of limited edition 300 vinyl here (http://www.sonig.com/main/imklein/esc.jpg).

Best sleeve of the year was Mu's Paris Hilton (http://www.substrata.com.au/A557D8/substrata.nsf/Titles/RMOE-64K9S7?Open):

I have some of those too.

Nice list. My only beef is with cLOUDDEAD, who I think are awful. For rap, I would recommend albums by Masta Killa and Madvillain.

What do you think of bands like Acid Mothers Temple and the Boredoms? Nagisa Ni Te? I think it's been an exceptionally strong year for Japanese psychedelic and folk-oriented music.

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2004-12-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I played a couple of times this year with Acid Mothers Temple member Yoshimitsu Ishiraku, aka Dora Video (http://www.livejournal.com/users/imomus/2004/10/07/). I like the Boredoms, though I haven't bought their new one. I think the influence of these guys is strong on people like Black Dice and Animal Collective. One of my phrases of the year -- for the year in music -- was 'latent Japanoise envy'!

I'm sure there are gems amongst the records I only heard snippets and clips of this year. For instance, Youssou N'Dour's Egypt (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?userid=RA1F9rb9iP&EAN=75597969429&ITM=1) sounds gorgeous.

I didn't "like" all of this stuff immediately but it all sounded refreshingly unlike the more traditional pop/rock stuff I'm finally starting to be jaded to. I sorely need to start putting more Internet feelers out there and sampling some of this amazing stuff that's available. I'm this close to just buying the Lullatone album right now.

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2004-12-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The Lullatone record is great music to have sex to! And it's music made by nice people, you can hear that in it. Deceptively simple, friendly, gentle, reassuring (almost 'soothing sounds for baby') and yet quite complex and wise underneath. As natural as rain... it's given me a lot of pleasure this year, and I would never want to underestimate pleasure. That's why I've put it first in my list.

Talking of 'reassuring', a retro purchase I may shortly make is the Wire DVD On the Box (1979) (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?userid=RA1F9rb9iP&EAN=843190000050#REV).

Almost whenever I think of Lullatone now, I picture Shawn James Seymour holding a poop-on-a-stick and smiling, an image I saw in the Mumbleboy site!
This issue with deceptive simplicity is interesting to me... Shawn once said in an interview that simple things are cute, and in the fashion of parodoxes, I think there is another, more base type of cute that is based on the cornucopia model.
For instance, I remember getting Lullatone's 'Computer Recital' and an Of Montreal album in the same package one day, and showing my mum. The Lullatone cover was simply a blue sky with a mini-title and drawing of a baby rain cloud. The Of Montreal cover showed limey moustachioed dogs, balloons, red mounds, a headdress, patterned sweater and pinstripes. My mum commented on the Of Montreal cover but not 'Computer Recital' and that made me feel sorry for the Lullatone CD...
My point is that while there's a lulla-cute which is unassuming, shy, innocent and friendly, there's also a Of Montreal cute which is all about trying really hard to please, being really eager in a way perhaps even younger than the Lulla-model, eager to make the viewer smile, perhaps out of sheer force.
There's a passage in Computer Recital that makes me think of puffball creatures waddling home from school! I think you need to be sophisticated to really appreciate deceptively simple music like Lullatone's.
I'm going through a singing badly fun-phase!

Oh, of course. Patrick Wolf, the Pippi Longstocking of folktronica...friends rave about his live appearances too.

For your visual and aural pleasure: Khonnor!

More music...

Your addition of Devendra is humourous to me for some reason. I like his music, but find him to be incredibyl overrated.
I'm not surprised that you left out the recent Brother Danielson album, Brother is to Son, but you may want to check it out. My pick for one of the best of this year. That coupled with Destroyer's Your Blues. Momus, have you listened to Dan Bejar? Lyrically gifted man that Destroyer!

Thanks for putting me onto the brilliant Lullatone cd : I've just bought it today, and it is sooo gorgeous it melts my heart.
I also have you to thank for getting me into the last Hypo album : I'd read a lot about it and been really intruiged, but it was your review which made me buy it (because I consider you to have impeccable taste).
I am really looking forward to hearing your new album (I have been a fan of your music since "Murderers the hope of woman", and your music has really been very influencial on my taste in music).
