The Lullatone record is great music to have sex to! And it's music made by nice people, you can hear that in it. Deceptively simple, friendly, gentle, reassuring (almost 'soothing sounds for baby') and yet quite complex and wise underneath. As natural as rain... it's given me a lot of pleasure this year, and I would never want to underestimate pleasure. That's why I've put it first in my list.

Talking of 'reassuring', a retro purchase I may shortly make is the Wire DVD On the Box (1979) (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?userid=RA1F9rb9iP&EAN=843190000050#REV).

Almost whenever I think of Lullatone now, I picture Shawn James Seymour holding a poop-on-a-stick and smiling, an image I saw in the Mumbleboy site!
This issue with deceptive simplicity is interesting to me... Shawn once said in an interview that simple things are cute, and in the fashion of parodoxes, I think there is another, more base type of cute that is based on the cornucopia model.
For instance, I remember getting Lullatone's 'Computer Recital' and an Of Montreal album in the same package one day, and showing my mum. The Lullatone cover was simply a blue sky with a mini-title and drawing of a baby rain cloud. The Of Montreal cover showed limey moustachioed dogs, balloons, red mounds, a headdress, patterned sweater and pinstripes. My mum commented on the Of Montreal cover but not 'Computer Recital' and that made me feel sorry for the Lullatone CD...
My point is that while there's a lulla-cute which is unassuming, shy, innocent and friendly, there's also a Of Montreal cute which is all about trying really hard to please, being really eager in a way perhaps even younger than the Lulla-model, eager to make the viewer smile, perhaps out of sheer force.
There's a passage in Computer Recital that makes me think of puffball creatures waddling home from school! I think you need to be sophisticated to really appreciate deceptively simple music like Lullatone's.
I'm going through a singing badly fun-phase!
