So where's the Gordon slash?

Judging by appearances is such a non-Presbyterian -- and therefore non-Gordon Brown -- thing to do, but let's say it anyway: Britain's new prime minister was a remarkably handsome guy back in the mid-70s.

He was also, as we saw last year, a rather good student rector at Edinburgh University. Click here for the video featuring these images, and to hear an Edinburgh University official, speaking in 1975, saying "Sometimes student rectors seem to think that once they are rector this is equivalent to being prime minister."

Teenage Lenin was rather alright too.

I've heard that Student Rector is a much cooler thing to be than a wannabe Christian rocker, but that might just be [wait for it] an Ugly Rumour.

not one for the book...

Momus, were you hot in your mid-twenties? Please post pics of self in that timeframe, so we can compare and contrast.

Difficult to tell from that image. But I'm assuming that Momus was a bit gawky and bony in his twenties, and that age becomes him.

YES WHERE IS THE GORDON BROWN SLASH, PEOPLE? >: (
I WANT SOME!!!!!

Actually, I´m quite sure I read some, ages ago. I´ll go find it.

Our new PM in his mid-twenties appeared to have resembled Mick Jagger ca. 'Performance'. Keith Richards for Minister of Health, anyone?

[identity profile] barnacle.livejournal.com 2007-06-29 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
He's pretty, but a bit shiny. Are we sure he's not an Auton?

(Anonymous) 2007-06-29 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
he looks like he's high

another previous "long hair" becomes just another establishment square.

(bill clinton syndrome: begin by studying socialism, playing the saxophone and smoking grass...end up bombing small countries and playing footsies with the bush family).

A square hit Michael, sure Gordie looks like Nick Drake on steroids but look at his predecessor's Marc Bolan-with-cheese, cheeky campus look.
Never trust a hippy.

i trust all hippies--real hippies, not posers. i never trust a square. :)
predecessor was worse: even longer hair and shorter tenure as a hippie,
if i recall correctly.

Persil or Daz? Tide or Ariel?

Expecting hippies to be automatically deserving of trust is a little like expecting Gordie's Labour to be socialist, the Labour party has been conservative-lite for almost two decades and the real maestro of double-speak has just taken the helm.
The concept of any real left/right dichotomy within British politics is as dead as it is within U.S. politics; always amusing however to watch nominal socialists indulge their delusion by cheering on the U.K. Labour party or the U.S. Democrats.
The policy differences betwixt Conservative and Labour and similarly Republican and Democrat are roughly akin to the product differences between Coke and Pepsi.

you said it. amen. labour or conservative, republicrats or demoblicans...the lot of them are a joke. i love to remind my democrat friends that kerry talked about INCREASING troops in iraq. tweedle dee and tweedle dum. obama and hillary? fucking moderate politicians, that's all. all these parties are a joke to real anarchists, or at least those who believe in no parties, no governments, no militaries, police, religions, etc. they can all go to hell.

Oh sweetheart, stop pouting and come in from the rain--your soup is almost ready. We'll even put on that noisy "Fight Club" dvd, if you like.

We know all those infuriatingly productive, sensible grownups keeping things running for us while providing for their families set you into tantrums right now--but believe us when we say that when you're a big boy with real responsibilities, you'll understand why they make such unforgivable concessions with their hair styles.

Now, do you want crackers with your soup?
