Well, Hisae and I dutifully took in the Pictoplasma Character Walk (it's not the characters who walk, but the punters, forced this year to pound miles of Berlin sidewalk to find all the participating galleries), but the work on display was underwhelming. Even David Shrigley's film (about a nutter who lives in a swamp) seemed a bit mainstream, stale and forced. The one exception, though, was Mehdi Hercberg's Shobo Shobo drawing show. Brilliant stuff, with tons to look at:

Was that cute Japanese bird, arching her back and tossing her hair, one of the "tons of things to look at"?

Was she just trying to be seductive or just vainly rearranging her hair knowing she was about to appear on here?

Wow, that is pretty amazing for having drawn all of that an hour before the show started. I bet there's a giant pile of cheap Bic ballpoints outside next to the curbside trashcan.

I was browsing http://www.shoboshobo.com/ hoping to find more sketches of scary, spurting nostril activity, and came upon a completely unexpected image:

Which I've now stolen and avatarized. Which is probably not something Mehdi Hercberg wants me to do. But I don't care, this image deserves to be seen.

I have been inspired to steal some of Hercberg's heads to make Staredown in the Freak Tent (http://famouslibrarian.com/misc/staredown.html). Coming soon to a billboard near you!

Because mahdy is the only one who is actually clinically insane as picture 1 shows (that's his special care worker keeping an eye on him)

i went for shobo shobo's show today, because ulli thought it's for me, and because i saw your entry. well, i was quite underwhelmed by him, too. for those, who don't know this "approach", his work might look interesting, but it's actually considerably lesser than that by his obvious heroes, which are much too visible in his drawings. in fact, i could hardly see anything personal there.
here's my entry about it for the electrocomics.com weblog, with references to the artists he modeled himself on, which are important to know, when speaking about hercberg:
