Kinokuniya in Rockefeller Center sells Fruits, methinks. There's also a really great Japanese pastry shop right next to it. I seriously don't understand the reasoning behind the concentration of Japanese goods in Rockefeller Center, but I find it to be pretty great.
re: the handfull of Japanese shops in Rockefeller Center - I don't know if it's still the case but over a decade ago (though not as long as Kinokuniya has been there) it was often quoted "and the Japanese now own Columbia Pictures and Rockefeller Center". Anyway the Japanese National Tourist Bureau is in the same building too. Lots of interesting English language brochures from less internationally travelled to prefectures. -ndk

There's also Zakka, near Canal St.
