Whacky rock superstar Momus stunned fans yesterday by announcing that his first London show in years will take place at a tiny suburban public library!

The eye-catching pirate, known for loopy hits like Beowulf (I Am Deformed) and My Sperm Is Not Your Enemy, delighted his colourful followers with the news that he plans to perform a full set amongst the shelves of the Donald Hope Library, Colliers Wood, London on April 26th.

Speaking by satellite video phone from his inflatable dome home in Berlin, the Howard Hughes of pop explained: "I wanted to do something a bit different. This will be the ultimate intimate Momus show. Just you, me, the music, and 20,000 volumes of large print Barbara Cartland."

Is the Momester playing with a full deck? What about the trademark razzledazzle, the jumpkicks, the firebombs? Is all that Wembley Stadium stuff old hat? Are books where it's at now?

"I think so," muses the trend-setting chameleon, dressed in a poncho, sailor pants and Dutch clogs. "Books are really, really great. Check a few out while I'm performing, they may have changed since you last looked. Try a work of non-fiction with a nice jacket, or a novel by an author with a foreign-sounding name!"

"Books are sexier than Robbie Williams," adds the sarcastic vaudevillian in a sly dig at the arch-rival who calls him "that skinny clown".

"If you join a library, they're free to borrow."

The same thing happened to me, Rhodri -- I was gobsmacked to discover that Bush Hall, which I pass whenever I'm in the vicinity of 310 Uxbridge Road, London W12 (0208 222 6955), will, on April 27th at 7.30pm, host a show featuring Momus, Free French and Stars in Battledress, tickets £7.00 (http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=uk&query=detail&event=120158).

My local library! Famed throughout the borough for its Credulity Section (numerology, Nostradamus and, lately, Knights Templar). I look forward to it.

Does Robbie Williams really call you that?

Robbie is actually one of my pet hates. He's one of these people who has infiltrated music whilst having no interest in music whatsoever, in a similar way that many people have infiltrated films who have no interest in acting. What Robbie produces, instead of music, is one long fart, in the manner of a schoolboy showing off - and he expects applause for it.

And I'm actually being very mild in the above statement.

Is this true? Can we mount some sort of counter attack? The problem seems to be reaching serious proportions.

A hair stylist to the stars writes:

Deliberately messing up your hair to disguise a receding hairline and/or thinning hair really doesn't work. It's the hipster equivalent of the comb-over - you think it hides something but it doesn't really. Now the good news for you Momus is that you have a long face, so shaving your head or keeping your hair extremely short is actually a good stylish option, and one that I strongly recommend.

Right, you've four weeks to secure me a ticket for travel by aero-plane to Ingerland or a bit less time to convince Steve Fossett to quit fucking about and have his damn balloon ready to take me from St. Louis (a mere three hour ride from here) to India, where I expect you to have a cab waiting.

Don't worry, I'll cover the event's ticket price on my own.
I'm terribly "prol" about such things.

This was a great idea, people are forgetting what libraries look like. Also
Books are sexier than Robbie Williams.

I want the t-shirt of that.

Books indeed ARE sexier than Robbie Williams...

Great idea. Libraries no longer seem to get the recognition they deserve these days. A Momus concert would be a great way to promote their many uses.

Do I sense a Momus "Give a hoot, read a book!" poster coming soon? (I kid. *smiles* )

Take care

I hope you find the time to do something interesting in San Francisco as well.

Will you be touring with American Patchwork performers, finding other interesting local talent to perform with, or...?

I thought you might be interested in knowing the following... Brian Eno just released a new website - http://www.libdemthistime.org (http://www.libdemthistime.org/) - in which he seeks the public support of musicians, authors, artists, and other well known people for the Liberal Democrats this year.

Not the person I would've suspected to lead such a movement, but I'm glad someone like him has done this.
