I've been wearing one today myself. It's to prevent other people catching my cold. It's other-oriented, not for self-protection. It sort of says "I am inexcusable, I am sneezing and runny-nosed, but I have bought these masks at my own expense to save you the same unpleasantness." Today is actually snowy in Tokyo, and I swear that as I walked down the street at least half the people were wearing these face masks. There's a cold bug going around.

In summer some people may wear these as pollen protection, though, I'm sure you're right.

I look forward to Japan's key role in the inevitable resurgence of the bolo tie.

Please excuse this off topic post.

I'm curious. Are you a friend of Edwyn Collins? I once read something where the two of you were mentioned in the same paragraph.

I'm incredibly sad about his recent illness.

I've been bumping into Edwyn for more than 20 years, at weddings, at his gigs, at parties. We've often been on the same label at the same time (Creation, Setanta) and have mutual friends, and tonight I've been reading about his haemmhorage with alarm. He's a lovely man and I really wish him the speediest and best of recoveries. Here's a photo of us together in happier times, back in 1997:

Thank you for posting the photo. I've been listening to Edwyn since Orange Juice. He is a very special person, and as corny as it might sound, an inspiration to me.

I'm so sad. I put a message up on the entry page on my site.

I did not realize Little More was a gallery as well! I'd love to skim through a girl's rooms magazine. In conclusion, any place that pays one in book tokens is clearly some sort of magical fairyland from space I would only dream of. I've said jokingly how I should just be paid in magazines, ha.

Just listened to the audio blog and got curious. How do you record it? Do you walk around like a guy from a local radio channel talking to yourself in a huge microphone? :) /Jesper

I pretend I'm talking into a cell phone. Actually it's my digital camera. People in Tokyo are very discreet. No matter how madly you're behaving, they won't stare. Foreigners have carte blanche to be eccentric anyway.

I make hundreds of little sound files, then drop them into iTunes in the same sequence they were recorded in, put a 2 second cross-fade between them, and record the playback with WireTap. I then make that file into an mp3 and upload it to my site. Very easy.
