Today I'd like anyone who's got a copy of my new album Otto Spooky to tell me something about it... and you.

How does this long-playing Momus record fit into your listening routine? What records do you play before and after it? Have you bought anything since, and is Herr Spooky throwing shade or overshadowed? Were you particularly struck by certain lines? Do Otto's musical textures please you? What's great and what grates? Where does Otto stand in your personal canon of Momus records (assuming you have some other ones)? What do you think of John Talaga's intermezzi? Have you fallen asleep to this music, made love to it, got lost in it, jogged with it, played it in your car while driving through a National Park? Did you cover your children's ears when the song about the fascist boyscout came on? (Assuming you have children, that is.) Did your dog chew James Goggin's digipak (if so, print the JPEG above on stiff card and spray it with some foul-smelling fixative). Do any of the songs play in your head even when the record isn't on? When you're at the supermarket, do you ever look around to see if Robin Hood is there "in a wheelchair buying food", kidney dialysis colostomy bag by his side? Are you a top-scoring, panda-topping Lute Score wizard?

Uh-oh, a good album? Well, as long as it's not a "timeless classic" I'm okay.

a let down

this is my least favorite Momus album of the last decade... probably since Timelord... and continues the downward arc that started with folktronic. it reminds me of Bowie in the '90s. better, or at least more ambitious, than many things out there, but depressingly below Momus standards... especially lyrically.

truthfully, the most interesting part of the album, for me, was your description of it. the album i imagined was far more interesting than the album i heard. i'm obviously in the minority on this board, but that's because many former momus fans have just given up and struck out for new territory.

i heard samples of the album before it came out and was pretty sure i wouldn't like it. but your past albums have been so important to me, have filled my life with so much magic and wonder, that i bought it anyway . with all the joy you've given me i thought i at least owed you that.

brian eno once said something to the effect that if he had always done what fans wanted, he would have never have created the albums that so many people consider so important. perhaps it's the same here. i hope so. by purchasing the album i'm hoping that you quickly move on to some other style, find new concerns, and rediscover your lyrical talents. after all, dylan had a run of bad albums but then came back. in essence, by purchasing the album i'm voting not for the songs, but for future songs, ones which i hope will be more interesting and compelling. in this vain, i actually bought two copies of otto, hoping to help finance future endeavors.

Well, thanks for buying two copies, anyway! You don't say anything about why it failed to meet your expectations, though. In fact, you don't say anything about the record at all!

My goodness, you seem to be taking a very close interest in proceedings Momus. What would you like me to say about your new album? Genius, is that what you want me to say? Nowhere near, you odiously narcissistic man. You can't do music (and I think you know that, deep down). And as for your writing (since you invite/need opinion) - you show yourself to be a fool, intoxicated with the fecundity of your own verbosity. You are simply 'memed' (I use the word reluctantly) to the eyeballs, nothing more; desperately scrambling to stay up to date (impossible, you pitiable information Sisyphus you) and incapable of saying anything of note.
Even a fool might be a wise man if he could keep silent, runs the proverb. And this is so, not merely because then he would not betray his foolishness, but also because this self-control would help him to become conscious of himself as an individual, and would prevent him from adopting the crowd's opinion (oh, I'm afraid you have). Or if he had an opinion of his own, it would prevent him from hastening to get the crowd to adopt it. It's funny, there you are thinking you are not a fool, and that these words don't apply to you.

Oh no! The anonymous poster's got Momus pegged!

Get a clue: Momus was merely asking WHY you don't like the album. And you still have failed to answer the question.

Nice load of bullshit you typed out there. I cringed the whole way through. It makes a whole lot of sense to speak down to an artist you used to love, especially when it came unprovoked and when you have no idea what you're talking about. Perhaps you could detail what you don't like about the album in a more respectful manner. Because you've done a wonderful job of making your opinion meaningless.

Well said, Patrick, if a little sycophantic.
