Wish they all could be Cafe Soso girls

Yuki Murakami's photos of girls in the Cafe Soso, Sapporo, Hokkaido, posted on the Shift Magazine site, are much more inspiring than anything to be seen on the streets of Tokyo right now, or at least the photos on Tokyo Street Style.

This is probably because of Yuki's eye, and the fact that Cafe Soso is a highly targeted place, a magnet for people interested in visual creativity. Apart from being a great cafe with great music, it's also a bookshop, a design magazine and a lending library specialised in art, architecture and design.

I also find the Cafe Soso girls much nicer looking and nicer looking than the snooty, furry, tailored, high-heeled, over-made-up models currently to be seen at London Fashion Week. You know, how many animals died for you and just how bored are you to be here?

ah. i yearn to wear a fur coat/boots/scarf but i live in south florida and it would look utterly ridiculous.

sidenote: that print behind the first girl is beautiful.

Those prints are all from the Shift 2005 calendar. You can see all the work, read contributors notes, and order a copy here (http://www.shift.jp.org/096/2005calendar/). Phew, now I don't feel so guilt for stealing their bandwidth and running their photos here.

One of the Shift calendar artists, Daniel, is actually a regular here.

Any thoughts on why Japs have such bandy legs?

The last two girls were my favourite ones in that Shift edition too. Very nice indeed.

[identity profile] rainermaria.livejournal.com 2005-02-16 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
this is probably too obvious. maybe it looks better because it is grey and winter and those shift photos are taken indoors (lighter clothes) under much more flattering light.

yes,those girls are stylish!
i don't even check the tokyo street fashion and jfashion websites any longer.it was such a pain for me to sit there and click through all the boring people to find one interesting person...
london fashion week looks incredibly boring..
i only dig out there designers like bernhard willhelm who just makes the ugliest most tacky clothes.

I think any or at least most personalized fashion is superior to what appears in those shows. I find organized fashion shows depressing and surreal at the same time. I suppose the spectacle is what keeps the appeal for some people though.
But still, they need a bit of a reality check, because I think organized fashion presentations like that one are completely out of touch with the general public, even among young people. Personally, I'd rather not see any more small woodland creatures poached so that some emaciated model's back won't be cold when she walks from her plush apartment to her trendy nightspots for cocaine and dancing.

But at least you can see some spirit of individualism, experimentation, bravery in Tokyo , no ? I'm afraid Seoul is all elegant Burberry and tasteful jumpers.

Does this cafe soso girl know how many bunnies died for her??

I think fake fur is so "out".

What does your girlfriend think about you looking at other girls?

I think "Look but don't touch" is the guideline. I'm sure karllanders will add the requisite sexo-surreal one-liner.

(Anonymous) 2005-02-16 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Why isn't looking touching? I thought you didn't believe in the metaphysical?

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2005-02-16 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be more metaphysical to believe that looking was touching than to believe the reverse!

(Anonymous) 2005-02-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I thought that looking made an equal if not deeper impression than touching. You seem to be implying that looking has no real significance on either party.

Never heard anything about your lecture yesterday. I can just see the japanese students looking at each other afterwards: "Gee, got to get a Ph.D. in this. Ariel Pink is good fun and so is professor Momus..."

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2005-02-16 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't play the Ariel Pink video, I just talked about Cage, Eno, Off Site, Oblaat, Varese, Duchamp, Brecht, Shklovsky. And I sang one of my songs, 'Multiplying Love', and analysed another, 'Oskar Tennis Champion', explaining that the background sounds were recorded by artist Momoyo Toremitsu in workshops in Sumida. It then devolved into a discussion of Max/MSP. One of the students had made his own object-oriented music program and was thinking of using Max instead because his wasn't good enough.

I also find the Cafe Soso girls much nicer looking and nicer looking than the snooty, furry, tailored, high-heeled, over-made-up models currently to be seen at London Fashion Week.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that they are, or, indeed, that they are. And how American these Cafe Soso women dress.

o boy, what a girl!

(Anonymous) 2005-02-16 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
what do the BOYS in those cafees look like?
or aren't there any? or blocked out of view?

what DO japanese boys look like theese days?
I imagine there either look like momus or like girls.

btw, the new phiiliip album is great!
(and the new patrick wolf is sooo boring)

super furry scary

(Anonymous) 2005-02-16 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I was looking at the super furry picture on the office computer when at the next moment there came in a woman completely (over)dressed in fur. she must have seen my startled reaction as it was like a picture come to life suddenly. (and its not THAT cold in holland)

very scary.

I like the topmost girl best, but I seem to be in the minority here.

[identity profile] iamklaus.livejournal.com 2005-02-16 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The topmost girl is nice. I like the middle girl best because of her creepers. GAWD! But the topmost girl is nice.

(Anonymous) 2005-02-16 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It pains me to tell you that I once got a blowjob off of your girl at a party, not too long ago. It really does.
