I haven't found a good catalogging of differences in Japanese and eastern comic illustrations; such as the fact we rarely have kneeling positions in our comics, be it an actually kneel or simply both knees folded, as in the picture above. Beyond that, yellow seems to be far more popular as a color than we have here. I could be wholly uneducated and off the mark in this, but casually it appears to be the case.

I used to smoke the Wakaba when I was in Japan. They are between the Hope and the Echo in the picture above. It's unusual to see a vending machine with them in. Brings back memories.

I was going to post a link to an essay I wrote which starts with my smoking Wakaba on a balcony in Japan, but the site that it once belonged to has now gone the way of all small press horror publications (of which it was an extension). Truly, in this world of illusions, all things must pass. The waters of the river flow ceaselessly and are not the same water that flowed in the beginning. Bubbles burst and bubbles form, and truly the lives and habitations of men are as these.

ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかも、もとの水にあらず。よどみに浮かぶうたかたは、かつ消え、かつ結びて、久しくとどまりたる例なし。人と住処と、またかくのごとし。

And so on.

I've given up smoking, just about. It's obviously something that is on its way out now, and for that reason, I'm almost tempted to take it up again. I don't suppose I will, though. It already seems a remnant of a past age.

the bottom right crosswalk sign... can u translate? i lived in kyuushuu in high school but then i spent four years on mandarin and time at Beijing U and now i read japanese and it's like some alien is misusing the characters.

hm. so this is what i got...

QING (blue-to-green range of colour) demo kiken... YÈ (evening) no michi.

So correct my characters and tell me what this means, I'm so curious!

It seems to say:

青でもキケン　　夜の道

The first character is cut in half. It means, "Even at blue, it is dangerous", then, at the bottom, "The road at night." I assume the reference to blue is the traffic lights, since, confusingly, green traffic lights are referred to as being blue in Japanese.

Oh yes, 'qing' is pronounced 'ao' in Japanese, and 'ye' is pronounced 'yoru'.

Sorry, I've just re-read your post. I think, since you already know some Japanese and Mandarin, you should understand if I say that the word キケン, here in katakana, is actually 危険 when written in kanji.
