If only!

For some reason, my browser keeps resetting the homepage back to Netscape/CNN. It's a bit annoying, but at least I was alerted to the following item of news (http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?floc=FF-APO-PLS&idq=/ff/story/0001/20041031/1351385609.htm). Suddenly the election has turned entirely Gogolian. I am sure there are any number of lesser Chichikovs (http://litmuse.maconstate.edu/~glucas/archives/000388.shtml) scouring the countryside as I speak.

And Kerry really needs to see his tailor about that jacket...

What keeps boggling me personally is the American ultraconservative insistence that moderate Democrats like Kerry do indeed propagate a skewed, "unpatriotic" sort of "socialism", and that a liberal victory in any elections will open the door to this "socialism". Hillary Clinton was painted as being a socialist in disguise during her campaign for the Senate, and Republicans have been flinging this thing at Kerry on numerous occasions.

"Liberal" and "socialist" have, as terms, been intermixing since the thirties - with actual communist movements styling themselves "liberal" - and it's a radically different political culture, of course... but apparently "socialist" in America means "everybody left of Attila the Hun."

A lot of Americans seem to think 'Socialist' means 'Nationalsozialistische'. Which I've always found a bit weird - America is an ultraconservative country, yet prides itself on 'liberty'; and hates 'Socialism' cos they think it means ultra-conservatism. Yet Bush tries to discredit Kerry as a 'liberal'. And aren't "Democrats" and "Republicans" are pretty meaningless names in a state which already is a democratic republic?

All of which goes to show that politics these days is bugger all to do with ideology.

I've commented a few times this election cycle that if I were going to vote for the lesser of two evils, I'd be endorsing an Al Queda ticket.

I was sad to see Osama come out of hiding to make a campaign tape but too late to make it onto the ballot. So far, he's said the most reasonable things of anyone in this campaign. And outside of Nader he's been the only voice for ending this ludicrous 'War on Terror'. Maybe Al Qaeda and the Reform Party could do a fusion candidate for the next election?

I have two thoughts about this latest Osama tape. It's either written by an american(put your tin foil caps on!), or Osama is a whole helluva lot more savvy about America, american politics, and how things work over here than I'm comfortable giving him credit for. I don't know which of those is more frightening.

hahahaha!! and this is so true! but unfortunately americans won't understand that if we just stop fucking with their countries they will leave us alone. it's like such a simple concept but yet, americans turn it into this huge GIJOE type thing were osama bin laden is out to RULE THE WORLD!and spread EEEEVIL! so we gotta kick ass!it's pathetic. after reading what he said on the tape i laughed, cause i agree with lots of it..save for blowing up innocent people, which is stupid.

Can't wait to vote tomorrow. At school my astronomy professor took out 5 minutes to explain all the details of voting, and emphasized that WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE. That Americans should not take any sh*t from anyone at the polls and not let themselves get turned away.

He didn't make any political stances but said a friend of his was working on a very exciting space mission to gather data from the moons of Jupiter and was fired along with 19 of his colleagues under the patriot act.

If Bush wins again, I'm going with a group of friends to DC to protest.

I found it image googling the term 'John F Kerry'. Having looked at the site it's on, I'm reluctant to give it the honour of a link, because it's pretty vile. But on the other hand it's so silly, and contains such gorgeously inept and idiotic graphics, that I will. Stentorian (http://www.stentorian.com/politics). One guy with a 3D design package, a fascination with propaganda graphics, and some poisonous prejudices. A scream. If any of you become rabid goose-stepping libertarian nazis as a result of that link, blame me. And Anonymous.

I like your new icon. Is that military helmet you are sporting a kind of art guerilla chic ? Hope you've forgiven me for my fumbled remarks about post-modernism which were not meant as a slight on you at all. I got a bit carried away. As "Oskar" is my favourite of your works I sincerely hope you will keep it "fake". Incidentally what will "robotic rockist" irony be like ?

The helmet was just a prop lying around in the theatre where I'm currently rehearsing. No offense at all taken at your pomo remarks! I hope you like 'Otto', 'son of Oskar'. I have to admit, rather shamefacedly, that it's currently my favourite record, even though it's by me and that's rather embarrassing. I listen to it and think how sensual, adventurous and exotic it is, especially the first half (it's probably a bit too long at 70 minutes), and especially the way it now flows through the danger zones of John Talaga's morphs, like a singer dodging song shrapnel in a battlezone.

I think machines will be incapable of irony, though they may well have a steely or irony look.

I hope this doesn't sound completely pretentious, but I thought I'd share a little perspective as a US of American on Jane Fonda. I really don't many people in the US even know who she is. Some remember her as Barbarella, or as some woman who made exercise videos in the '80s. But few people who use her in the pejorative sense (in the US she's frequently used as a way insult liberal politicians) have any idea who she actually is. She's an urban legend now, a Bogeyman or Thing Under the Bed. Jane Fonda was a cute but talentless actress who in 1972 took a 2 week trip to North Vietnam. The trip was carefully orchestrated so that she only saw happy Communists, happy POWs and so on. Sadly, she didn't realize it was all just a show for her, and when she got back to the States, she told EVERYONE how great life was for the North Vietnamese and called the POWs who had returned to the US with prison camp horror stories liars. That's it. Stupid, yes, but just one of history's many famous people talking crap and being listened to because they are famous people. Certainly nothing to warrant the supervillian status some credit her with. And yet I often see posters with whatever liberal politician the Republicans are disliking at the moment, with Jane Fonda pasted into the background and the words "I'm not Fonda Hanoi Jane," scrawled overhead. It'd be great anachronistic irony if the creators meant it to be. Instead, it is just stupid. For today, though, I am going to think of "John Fonda Kerry" as a piece of brilliant post-post-modern satire. Thanks for sharing, Momus!
