Dandy in the underworld

It's the last day, alas, of this Japan trip. Tomorrow I fly back to Berlin, and today I'm heading up to Kyoto to see Doddodo in concert. It's been a gorgeous six weeks, in which I've seen amazing sights and also tried to provide an amusing visual spectacle to my hosts, the people of the enchanted archipelago. Today, in retrospect and celebration, I'm offering a selection of the ludicrous outfits I've been wearing.

Thank you, Japan! For the clothes, the experiences, the inspiration! See you soon!

You should post these on [livejournal.com profile] whatiworetoday2.

it's amazing how most people's places in japan are so messy; i know the space issue, blah blah it's small and all that, but jeez the pack-rat thing is tacky. and it's not only young people, either.

seriously, it's an ongoing phenomenon...

Momus's unrequited love for the camera.

you used the lj-cut tag! is this a first? ;)

So you've recovered from the post where you had a wobble about how middle-aged people, especially women, were receiving your look in Japan then? Good!

Is everything in Japan really small, or are you really big Momus?
It looks like you'll bang your head on every doorframe.

Momumodelus, when will you be featured in some underground fashion magazine?

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, see, these outfits are not so much 'ludicrous' as 'painfully middle class'.

You were not blessed with a style gene. What do you imagine people think of your dress sense?

Some of these silhouettes work really well, bulked up and boxy with tiny feet. I'm so bored of all the bottom-heavy clothes that are popular on the West.

I saw a very interesting and inspiring exhbition about Sashiko textiles,
http://www.sashiko.org.uk/
The technique is designed to strengthen parts of the clothing, but as a lovely by-product it is very decorative.

you're more into weird cuts than colors. das cool.

six weeks egad! Fairly shot by,

I like the last immensely, looks like my old primary teacher, Mr. Tim Booth-Jones, used to give bicycle tours of the town at one point i believe. Tremendous character. Spitting image except for the funny shoes and sidewise cap rotation.

I love the bicycle pic. It makes me happy.

Very enjoyable. Reminds me of your choice of duds circa 2001.

That said, I still think you have a dandy's temperament but a bohemian's closet. But I wouldn't have it otherwise, as it yields some marvelously playful results.

There needs to be more of you wearing multi-coloured eye patches. I feel that is an area of fashion lacking in creativity and you are ideally placed to innovate.

i want to be like you when i grow up.

Stephen Duffy said recently that his generation was "the last to give a damn". It being your generation also, I was wondering if you think this statement is true?

Best of intentions here, but still maybe crossing some line nonetheless:
is Hisae's English adequate enough to recognize your brilliance solely through conversation or is she "just with you for the hijinks"?

Momus Fashion the experiences, the inspiration, as amusing spectacle

Every post a GEM Nic.

Any relation to these two?

Being a fan of high/overly layered neckwear myself, I really like the outfits with such neck/shoulder accentuation. Also bummed yet again that I didn't get myself workwear tabi shoes... though I do own tabi shoes. :/ How many pairs of sou-sou socks did you and Hisae end up with?
