Dandy in the underworld

It's the last day, alas, of this Japan trip. Tomorrow I fly back to Berlin, and today I'm heading up to Kyoto to see Doddodo in concert. It's been a gorgeous six weeks, in which I've seen amazing sights and also tried to provide an amusing visual spectacle to my hosts, the people of the enchanted archipelago. Today, in retrospect and celebration, I'm offering a selection of the ludicrous outfits I've been wearing.

Thank you, Japan! For the clothes, the experiences, the inspiration! See you soon!

Stephen Duffy said recently that his generation was "the last to give a damn". It being your generation also, I was wondering if you think this statement is true?

I don't recall any strong political stance from Duffy, nor any call to boycott a company, ot take direct action against something tangiable. Duffy likes dressing up, preening in a mirror defined his generation (The Face via Bunty), so perhaps when he made that statement he fancied the "duffle coat, badges, marching to Aldermaston" look. But we can rest easy - there was nothing behind it.

Reminds me of Bobby Gillespie saying "the young can't get it up". Or Morrissey saying we're "the last truly English people you will ever know", etc. It's rubbish. There will be more cakes and ale, and more greatness.

Greetings from Helsinki airport. Is there anything more beautiful than orange sun gilding the tops of the Ural mountains after six hours of Siberia?
