It's a matter of historical record that on my 1999 album Stars Forever I made thirty lucky people, well, stars forever, and all for the very reasonable price of $1000 per person per song. Per ardua ad astra, as they say; through struggle to the stars. What's less well known is that on the accompanying tour I reduced the prices (and, it has to be said, the amount of effort going into the songs) significantly, eventually making random people "stars for now" for the fire sale price of just $5.

In newly-released video material from the archives of record label Le Grand Magistery, you can see me performing this feat (and explaining the commercial logic behind it: I'm undercutting my undercutters) at Reed College, Portland, Oregon on November 14th, 1999, making a girl called Kitt a star with a completely impromptu song.

Later, of course, making stuff up on the spur of the moment and putting it immediately into the public domain would come to be known as "blogging".

Not as good as Adam Green, that man has his own anthem. Nice to see you pioneering another genre however.

More Instant Portraits.

More of these "instant portraits" will be posted daily at http://www.youtube.com/magistery . I believe there are a few dozen yet to see the light.

Later, of course

That is a ruff gig doing the spontaneity trip. However you seemed comfortable.

Your "Reckless Records" track seems a precursor to "Joemus" as well as an evolution of the cover.

On the Julian Gough blog you seem to be beside some polar celebs, like Spongebob Squarepants. Also Aristophanes and Karl Marx are separated by Japanese Otearai. It must be a metaphysical blunder of one or another.

I'll never forget you making me an instant song on stage in Seattle. I have "A User's Guide to Layna" somewhere...

A boy I'd crushed on a decade ago in Florida saw me on stage, and thought I was a huge big deal celeb in Seattle. Obviously I had just emailed the right guy, but I didn't tell Florida Boy that.

I recall that song and I just located a tape labeled "Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis 1999." Will try to get to it this weekend!

Sadly, I can't listen to that album anymore without bad memories rushing to my mind. Thank God you have 5 million more albums to listen to, like Sparks does.

i was hardly a fan, but it's psychically bad news for the nation as a temporal whole (if you will).

moreover, it's bad cosmic PR for the nation as well; what japan doesn't need is more evidence of the extreme harshness with which people treat themselves when losing face, etc. there's something to be said for the conscientiousness of the culture, to a degree, but it's bullshitwhen it gets to this point, i say.

that is certtainly a firbankian quote from your book of jokes there inthe spike article. were you ever influenced by ronald firbank?

It's 10 years already? Wow.
I am curious what happened to some of the patrons actually.
Most of all Noah Brill and Shawn Kruger.
Oh, Mai Noda's iMac ...

Yes, I'd love to know too. Noah Brill must be 13 or so. A google on his name brings up only my song, which of course portrays him as a Buzz Lightyear-loving 2 year-old, so I could totally understand if he'd changed his name by now. Stars Forever? Googlecursed forever, more like!

This (http://twitter.com/fbng) seems to be Shawn Krueger on Twitter, and he has a "wife and kid" and runs a graphic design business in the Minneapolis / St Paul area. I'm guessing Mai Noda's strawberry iMac is probably enjoying the bondai blue vistas in computer heaven.

Stars Forever is still my favorite Momus album. If you ever find yourself hard up for cash, make another one!

On a book tour, you could consider narrating an impromptu lie or joke about a person in attendance.

Dear momus. I need you to do something for me. I know this sounds strange, but tomorrow at exactly 12:15pm I want you to go out in to your courtyard and look straight up at the sky.

Why, you ask? Because I have arranged for a skywriter to fly over and send you a message. Isn't that cool! My original message was going to read -- DEAR MOMUS, PLEASE DON'T QUIT CLICK OPERA. YOUR DEVOTED FANS WILL BE LOST AND ALONE WITHOUT YOU AND WILL MISS YOU TERRIBLY. PLUS WE LIKE HEARING ABOUT HISAE OCCASIONALLY AND ALSO THE FREE SONG DOWNLOADS THAT YOU SOMETIMES GIVE US. PLEASE RECONSIDER!!!

But then I found out that they charge by the letter so the new message will simply read -- NO GO MO!

Remember 12:15 tomorrow. Be there.

Hello. How strange to see video of my 1999 self. Boy am I stiff. I had no idea anyone had a camera at EJs that night. And now it's on YouTube. EJs is now a pawn shop. I still have the Radio Shack cassette of the song and the Polaroid you took. I remember you telling Toog in French "tirez-la" or whatever. Usually I'm cheap and never have cash, but that night I just happened to have hit the ATM. I got lucky. And I got $10 worth of fame. Thanks for the memories!
