Music Mavericks is a series of thirteen public-radio programs hosted by Suzanne Vega, produced by Tom Voegeli, broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio, and archived online. The script manages to be, at times, smug and glib (a mere ten minutes into Episode 11, From Moog to Mark II to MIDI to Max, Vega is citing herself and Celine Dion as users of electronic orchestration) but this series covers a lot of interesting territory, with a good balance of narrative to illustration. Here are the shows, ready to be loaded up in RealPlayer:
Program 1: The Meaning of Maverick (59:00)
Program 2: What's American about American music (59:00)
Program 3: Oh, to be popular (59:00)
Program 4: It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing (59:00)
Program 5: If You Build It, They Will Come (59:00)
Program 6: West meets East (59:00)
Program 7: If Jackson Pollock Wrote Music (59:00)
Program 8: To Repeat or Not Repeat, That is the Question (59:00)
Program 9: The Do-It-Yourself Composer (59:00)
Program 10: What's So Great About the Orchestra? (59:00)
Program 11: From Moog to Mark II to MIDI to Max (59:00)
Program 12: Is It Music If Nobody Hears It? (59:00)
Program 13: Between a Rock and a Hard Place (59:00)
Also worth investigating are the standalone interviews down the page, and the additional material from the archives. I'm listening to an excellent Lamonte Young interview right now.
