A photo and sound report from Shetland. In the sound file you'll hear me and my mother talking, the wind, Shetland local radio, and readings on sound posts in the Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick.

The Shetland accent is so strange!

Thanks for the picture and sound collages.

The Isle of Skye was as far as I got. Beautiful.

That accent is fascinating. To my ear, it lilts and stumbles in equal measure. I like it.

And I want to hang out with the scuddler and his guisers!

Oy, I love this. reminds me of when I was a kid, staying up late, turning the dials of my little shortwave radio.

You look so cool in those photos. I can't tell... in the bottom left, is that a walking stick, or the famous momus appendage?

Hi Nick,
What are you up to between Shetland and your London as Tokyo event? Do you have any other UK shows planned in the next few weeks (or at all)? I live in Scotland ... yours in hope, Iain

(PS I've seen you twice before:- at Cottiers Theatre, Glasgow 1999 then somewhere near Shepherd's Bush, London in 2004/5)

Hope you are doing well.

Hi Iain, actually there are some UK shows coming up in July. I play live in Newcastle (at the Star and Shadow) on July 23rd. Then on July 27th I play at Stereo in Glasgow with Germlin supporting. There are also shows coming up in Barcelona and Berlin (July 4th and July 20th respectively).

Maybe see you at the Stereo show!

It has a lot of Norwegian syllables in it! So that's what's going on. Scots suddenly makes sense.

strange!

Never thought you would utter a word like that. You being sort of the "TIME" ethnographer and all. On the brighter side it reminded me of the last time I got an ear infection. Brought back a lot of memories it did. Your mum's a peach. A bit of alright if you know what I mean, wink, wink and nudge!

Hi Nick,
Iain again here - many thanks for replying so quickly. Great to hear that you will be playing in Glasgow again soon. I will definitely get along to the Stereo gig - as someone else said it has moved now to Renfield Lane, right in the city centre very close to Glasgow Central train station.

Hope you enjoy Shetland. It looks and sounds amazing.

All the best,
Iain

Fascinating accent

I've never heard a British Isles accent so strongly linked to its Scandinavian roots before. It has a wonderful pitch and rhythm, ideal for reciting old Norse sagas!
