When I was wearing a straw hat recently, Hisae told me I looked like a kakashi, a Japanese scarecrow. So today I've made a strip of pictures showing these folk creations.

The straw figures are used in Japan to scare birds away from crops, obviously, but also to enact political satire or pop culture commentary out in the fields: 3D inaka media, if you like. They appear mostly in September, the harvest season. There's even a horror film (Kakashi, 2001) based on them. They appear in my 2004 song Life of the Fields too:

Life of the Fields (stereo mp3 file, 5.3MB)

PS: Hamburgers, I play live in your city this afternoon!

Thank God. A couple who don't look like brother and sister. I spent a day surrounded by those types in Brick Lane. Eesh.

Maybe there's a certain kind of young person who can afford to move to London these days. "Yeah I meant Sus in second year at Warwick Uni. She was really into the Guillemots and so was I. She was totally peed off with her housemates and so was I. I guess I felt like I'd known her my whole life."
