Tuesday night saw a big summer firework display over the Yodogawa River in Osaka. 747s approaching nearby Kansai Airport seemed almost to fly through the impressive display, which included smiley faces and Hello Kitty portraits sketched in coloured fire. (Kittymania also hits Tokyo this week, with shows commemorating 30 years of the silly milquetoast beast at both Roppongi Hills and Laforet Museum.) The highlight for me, though, was the profusion of lovely yukatas, lightly clingy in the warm summer rain. It's hard to pick a single yukata as the loveliest; their beauty seems to come in the combinations formed as friends walk side by side. Yukatas also bring a sense of occasion: a girl in a yukata, with her manga fan and her keitai internet swivel stick, is always hurrying to some magical and important gathering, like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. Click the photo to hear the sound of geta, the wooden sandals worn with yukata. I often wonder if the block soles are tuned to make a kind of 'delicious girl walking melody'.
