Mizutani Cable Knit Corporation

Me: Wow, is that what you've been knitting all this time?

Hisae: Yes, it's a woolen cable cover.

Me: It's good, I like the colours! And I always like that combination of folksy and tech styles. Like when Bless did their N°26 Cable Jewellery thing, "to transform undesired appendixes into desirable objects". And does it stop the rabbit biting your power cable?

Hisae: Yes, it does.

Me: We need a lot more of those! For the rabbit's sake and ours. Hey, you should sell them online! Why not?

Hisae: Yes, I was thinking of doing that. I spoke to Naoko and she said I should charge €90 for each one.

Me: Wow, €90!

Hisae: It sounds a lot, I know, but each one takes a week for me to knit.

Me: I think €50 sounds reasonable. The euro's pretty strong just now. That's about $75, you know. How about €50 including postage? I could announce it on Click Opera and people could pay via my Paypal account! Do you want to try?

Hisae: Okay!

Me: Okay, I'll do it tomorrow. People can order them by sending me a mail and telling me how long the cable to be covered is. Let's shoot some pictures!

Hisae: I already shot some, I'll mail them to you. What shall we call the operation? I want a good name.

Me: Hmm... Psychedelic Python? Rainbow Power? Mizutani Cable Knit Corporation?

I think you should point out that 50.00 EUR=37.13 GBP. That's pretty cheap for a genuine Scottish bespoke knitted article.

[identity profile] chuckdarwin.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not completely Scottish, but... you could spin it that way. Marketing, you know.

[identity profile] imomus.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, Chuck, Mizutani Textile Industries appoints you head of marketing. You start at an annual salary of 39 euros.

[identity profile] chuckdarwin.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I won't do it for less that 40.

[identity profile] dzima.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
OK, now next time please don't criticise Marxy for giving props to Kiiiiiii in American magazine articles...

More dust gathered on the table - o, no.

But it gave me my morning laugh :)

Oh my god, that is adorable.

Sorry to rain on your parade

As a government health and safety advisor i'm afraid i am going to have to stop this Mizutani Cable Knit Corporation before it even gets off the ground. A little bit of me wants it to work, however the fire hazard is there for us all to see. The only other solution i can think of would be to cover the cable in that stuff young girls put on their nails to stop them biting them. That would surely stop the rabbit from nibbling.

Ah, nice blog, I've added it to my menu called "Best"!

Agreed; it's excellent.

[identity profile] eclectiktronik.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Provided the cables are in good condition (i.e. no nicks or damage to the rubber insulation, which is dangerous to begin with anyway) there should be no great fire risk with this cover, especially since I presume it will mostly be covering low voltage, low current DC cables like the one connecting the laptop to the transformer, or signal cables (like modem leads or whatever).

The only *possible* risk I can see for those with animals is that, were the animal to nibble at the whole kaboodle, the extent of the damage to the actual cable might not be appreciable till it is too late. But that would only really be a fire risk if the mains part were chewed.

However, anything like a 'laptop tea cosy' which someone else on here mentioned in passing, is asking for trouble, given the heat those things chuck out and the need for ventilation. Amen. ;-)

Or how about selling a Mizutani Cable Knit Corporation Official Pattern? Please share!

[identity profile] restartsmyheart.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
As a knitter, I think $75 is a good price for these, its a great idea. I want to buy the pattern too.

Ugh. my stomach hurts from adorable. This post belongs on CuteOverload!

Pricing the priceless

[identity profile] brokenjunior.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
These colours are really nice - giving the cable a strange junglesnakelike feeling.

Reminds me also of the knitted digestive system (http://www.strangebuttrewe.com/knitGI.htm):

Talking about pricing and patterns as digital data, I think we touch interesting issues here:
although I am/"feel" too poor to pay 50 euros for this, I think the initial 90 euros or even more would be appropriate (hisae worked a week, or at least some days on it right?)
Thinking of the object in terms of an art piece and not as a commercial product with practical functionality (frightening off rabbits, flammable) it seems somehow unpayable to me, whereas the knitting pattern - as a technique - then in turn could also be free...

Try next for getting a cover for Mr. Johnson! In Python of course.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-30 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone worried about fire can use it as a necklace, or just don't leave the house with it plugged in (you have been warned). The idea of a making the instructions for sale is excellent for impoverished click opera readers. If she knits it in the opposite direction, vertical rather than horizontal, it may be faster for her to make.

[identity profile] peachweeks.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just wondering if Hisae used the magic loop method to knit her cable covers? If it could be made small enough, it would cut the knitting time in half. Great apologies if I'm teaching her to suck eggs.

There's a video on it here. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques.
It's in the small diameter circle knitting section. Pink is continental knitting style and blue is English knitting style.

[identity profile] alaplantine.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
ha ha, that's very nice, and funny.
I also like the folksy colours.
But here I would need at least 50 kilometers.

[identity profile] olivepixel.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This could be a valid use of French knitting. Perhaps the only valid use.

Queer-knitting Industries? Colour worm rings? Hmmm...totemo hen that spineless aparatus.

Hey, I´m in Berlin for the Transmediale and I´m wondering if there are any nice cafés that have wireless internet where I can read your blog and sip orangensaft. Any tips? I live in Mitte and walk slow.

My friend Michelle McCoskey (http://michellemccoskey.com/crochet.html) makes zoomorphic custom scarves:

Have you ever seen the crocheted coral reef? (http://www.theiff.org/reef/index.html)

zoomorphic custom

[identity profile] pay-option07.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yur Lrdshp, you should have Michelle McCoskey knit a matching set of hatbands to match that scarf.

[identity profile] notapunk.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
you should learn how to knit so you can produce two pieces a week.

[identity profile] fishwithissues.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
whoah beautiful! sell them for as much as you can though! or maybe we need a biometric sliding scale so the price of the cable is exactly what you can pay (unless you've been extravagantly splurging on usb extenders!)

[identity profile] birdflew.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I'm sure my bunny would be much gnaw right through that. I've had to put grates up around my desk to prevent my bunny from getting in back. But that does look nice!

[identity profile] birdflew.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
would be much gnaw? wow.

[identity profile] tranceperentsky.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's looks like cool!
I have to remake some things in crochet.. but crochet and knit are different.
I think 50€ is a good price, maybe +10-15€ is better for the rentability and the work (i know it, a bit). I know people who sell some very cute scarves for more of 100-200€

About the crocheted coral reef, i seen a same decoration in my school with the topic of Forest with dark green, brown, etc. It was very... beautiful.. i never seen any other thing like it who was as better as it. Soon, i have a formation for making it!

Oh, i never commented to you before momus.
I add you because, i seen different topic about Shibuya-kei. I don't know a lot about it, but i like band like P5, Cornelius and now the new generation (?) like Capsule, PTSB, Coltemonikha, etc.
I saw that you know very well this topic.., also i think you are interesting? Ne?^^
And i know that your the productor of Kahimi Karie! I like her.

These are at once avant and retro, could you and Whimsy find aesthetic detente from either end of a woolen tube?
I think you are under-pricing Hisae's clicking at $75-00; why not contact Steve Jobs, offer to organify Apple by 45% using homespun, fire-retardant Leporidae-friendly yarns at oooh...$75-00 per linear tubular inch instead?
Introducing the iconduit!

Such a cute idea. Love the colours against the white, and the hi-tech/no-tech blend- and I wish my knitting was that neat and perfect. Nice work, Hisae, hope you sell some!

but did it really transpire that she knit something for a week and it didnt come up for you to ask what she was knitting? a quiet household over there!

would you offer refunds to people whose cables were gnawed by rabbits after they installed the covers?

(Anonymous) 2008-02-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love it! I wish I could afford one...

Instead, I am going to teach myself how to knit so I can knit a 25-footer for my vacuum's cord. My cat has a sort of chewing issue, I think he's got brain damage.
