I'm playing a concert in Athens this Saturday.

Saturday September 15th 2007
Legal Tender presents...
Momus
Mathew Sawyer and the Ghosts
Victory Collapse
Bios
84 Pireos Avenue
Athens
Greece
8pm
€15

My concert co-incides -- whether happily or not I won't know until I check it out -- with the First Athens Art Biennial. Yes, the city has joined the gazillion others which now host biennials and triennials. The curators, filled with punky spunk, have named theirs "Destroy Athens". Unfortunately, shortly after they chose the name parts of Athens really were destroyed. By fire. "This reminds me of the last day of Pompeii," commented one resident, who seemed to have a long memory.

The curators' manifesto is, appropriately enough, a scream.

"Destroy Athens tells a story," it informs us. "As the place where the story unfolds we chose Athens; at first perhaps for the obvious reason that we live here. However, we are in a way fortunate as Athens is in itself an appropriate emblem for what we termed a stereotype, throughout the long period that the story was being shaped, that is the sense of extra-determination which constitutes the extreme expression of the subject’s self-construction we mentioned before... A story is something which happens to a subject, to a potential “someone”. A story can face the question: what if all is not going to be alright? What if someone decides to try their luck, to raise their voice, to engage in conflict, to abolish consent, to destroy Athens? Let us, then, come to the monsters."

I must admit, I am fond of these young Bienials more then the big ones. These emerging new bloods...

The Istanbul Biennial, going on right now and curated by Hou Hanrou, seems to be one to watch. I'll give you my report on the Athens one in a couple of days, but I must say the Turkish title "Not Only Possible, But Also Necessary: Optimism in the Age of Global War" is much more my cup of tea than "Destroy Athens". It sounds more ethical, doesn't it? (But it would never do for the Greeks to be upstaged by the Turks.)

I would do ANYTHING for him to come to Los Angeles. I will settle for San Francisco though, if he decides to get over his LOVEHATE of LA.

See, I'm in SF (well, Palo Alto), so that'd be way easier. Damn Curries!

Awesome, I have a friend who lives in Palo Alto as well! She goes to Stanford. I was going to stay with her to see Jarvis Cocker, but I couldn't. I was so sad! :( :(

Well, if you want to see Justin I can give you details, but he and Momus are highly individual, differently awesome musicians :P

AAAH, for a second there I thought you were talking about my friend's ex-boyfriend Justin, and I was a little freaked out because it seemed like you knew about him!

Anyway, you don't need to tell me the details, I found out myself! And yes, they are both highly individual and awesome musicians! ~*oh, those Currie's*~

Are you implying that Momus walks on air and contemplates the sun?

I think it's been around.

Your Athens visit sort of follows Naomi Klein's new book
"The Shock Doctrine" about Disaster Capitalism.
This could be trend.

Artist statement copped from"The Clouds"?

STUDENT: Help! Who’s setting fire to the house?

STREPSIADES: It’s the man whose cloak you stole.

STUDENT: We’ll die. You’ll kill us all!

STREPSIADES: That’s what I want—unless this mattock
disappoints my hopes or I fall through somehow
and break my neck.

[Socrates comes out of the house in a cloud of smoke. He is coughing badly]

SOCRATES: What are you doing up on the roof?

STREPSIADES: I walk on air and contemplate the sun.

SOCRATES: [coughing] This is bad—I’m going to suffocate.

STUDENT: [still at the window] What about poor me? I’ll be burned up.

[Strepsiades and Xanthias come down from the roof]

STREPSIADES: [to Socrates] Why were you so insolent with gods
in what you studied and when you explored
the moon’s abode? Chase them off, hit them,
throw things at them—for all sorts of reasons,
but most of all for their impiety.

[Strepsiades and Xanthias chase Socrates and the students off the stage and exit after them]

CHORUS LEADER: Lead us on out of here. Away!
We’ve had enough of song and dance today.

I remember a couple weeks ago hearing about this deadly grease fire, I wondered what the big deal was. Turns out it was a Greece fire. Never seen one of those.

As big as your arm
Is no big deal"
