A couple of pieces of news. If you're in Berlin today, Hisae and I will be manning a little stall in front of Japanese cafe Smart Deli most of the day. Smart Deli is at Grünbergerstr. 90 in Friedrichshain, not far from Boxhagener Platz, which has a good junk market on Sundays. I'll be selling crappy old CDs from my boxes, and Hisae some necklaces she's been making.

I also want to say that I'll be playing a concert in Athens, Greece on Saturday September 15th:

15th September 2007, 20:00
LEGAL TENDER PRESENTS:
MOMUS + MATHEW SAWYER & THE GHOSTS
at BIOS
Pireos 84, Athens TK 10438
bios@bios.gr

Other live appearances include shows in New York and Brussels in October. Details on the Momus events page at LastFM.

yeah, good luck with the "crappy old CDs" - I'm getting rid of loads at the moment and am finding it tough to even give them away! The mp3 generation.

Who'd have thought they'd become redundant technology while vinyl flourishes? And the jewel case? Clearly the WORST example of 20th century design.

Oh, absolutely the worst. They crack, they splinter... and they reduced one of the best assets of the vinyl sleeve, the big expanse of artwork. Paving the way for music's current glib, grey immateriality, which has rendered it both priceless and worthless.

i've been having consistent problems with the CD drive in my macbook, and the attitude of the guys at the Apple service centre was that, yeah, they know they aren't very reliable but that they can't see Apple putting a lot of effort into improving them because they expect the whole 5inch optical disc to be completely redundant soon ...

I do like some of the ways people have tried to design around the crap-ness of CDs. The Ghost Box CDs with no inner tray card and no spine are quite nice in a shiny way, and the Finnish label Fonal does quite fragile card packaging. I also seem to remember one of the C86 era fanzines (might have been one of the Sarah Records ones) praising the inherent "pop"-ness of those little 3 inch CDs.

And the pre-recorded cassettetape is impossible to even recycle.
They sit there like some unfinished art project, laughing.
Thrift shops told me they could not accept them as they might have something damaging to minors on them. Apparently someone has been putting porn over Disney tapes.
Even my Yamaha cassette deck, £130 pounds at purchase is unacceptable to cash converter type trade in shops.

WRONG!

Uh hello, you CAN recycle cassettes!!! You just put a bit of tape over the little rectangle hole-tabs on the top corners, and voila!!! I have made 13098325 genius rerecordings onto old still-good tapes. To me it's a revival on par with vinyl!

you tell 'em, comrade. i've done all my taping on recycled cassettes! my first ever piece of music was beck's debut album and various tracks of cop shoot cop pasted elegantly over a vanilla ice tape. i'll never get rid of this/these. it's/they're charming.

Sorry. I meant the blank tape which has been recorded on. I couldn't remember the term for it. Due to lack of storage I had cases of the stuff I needed to offload and I could not find any takers.
