Here's another batch of demos from old Momus cassettes. This time we start with a few tracks from the "legendary lost Momus album" BBC 1. This was going to be the 1987 follow-up to Circus Maximus on el Records, and we already had a rather brilliant sleeve illustration (me as Atlas holding up the BBC 1 Earth logo) by Ed Pinsent. But, as fate would have it, I switched to Creation and made The Poison Boyfriend instead.

BBC 1 was to have been a theme album -- songs like "The Filippino", "Confectioner" and "Splitting the Atom in Eden" (released here for the first time) would have joined "The Mother-in-Law", "Love on Ice" and "Situation Comedy Blues" (later plundered somewhat haphazardly for Creation albums) on a record deconstructing television and the whole idea of mainstream electronic vaudeville. It's a retro theme now, of course; the golden age of television is clearly over. But electronic vaudeville continues to be a big theme for me, as does the question of whether life / sex is more interesting than media / art: there's some great entertainment lined up for me on BBC 1, but meet me on Shaftesbury Avenue...

The Golden Age of Television: Momus demos from the mid-80s (54.5 MB stereo mp3 file, 59 mins 33 secs)

The Filippino
Confectioner
Splitting the Atom in Eden
Ash and Sack
Nobody
Landrover
Paolo
Hotel Marquis de Sade
John the Baptist Jones
Lesson of Sodom (According to Lot)
Rules of the Game of Quoits
Lusts of a Moron
Amongst Women Only
Shaftesbury Avenue
Start at the Top
Could I Leave You? (Sondheim)

The comments for Amazing Blonde Women, the last Momus demos podcast, saw several people saying they'd be willing to pay something for these releases -- if you feel that way feel free to visit the old Momus website and make a Paypal donation using the button there.

I dont really see what you're getting so twisted up about.

Buskers & pavement artists have been doing it for centuries -- you create art for people to enjoy, you put your cap on the pavement, and if people like your creations they drop some coins in. It's just this time the pavement is the internet and the cap is paypal.

Artists work for commision all the time. Infact, Momus has done it before with 'Stars Forever', but it's probably best to pretend that album never happened ;o)

Oh I'm only kidding around, I don't buy into that whole sell-out thing, some of my favourite art has been motivated by money.

Everyone knows the title "Stars Forever" is supposed to be ironic, but a title like "Selling my soul coz I had the shit sued out of me" or "Here's your pound of flesh you ugly transexual cunt" would have propelled the album to truely legendary status.

Stars Forever is one of the most amazing albums I've ever listened to. It was a very brave undertaking - having no preconceptions about what the music would be, but having to take tidbits from several different sources and somehow molding songs together from them within a short time frame. I thought it was an incredible success, I've listened to it many times and I think all the songs are amazing(except maybe a couple I thought were so-so). I thought it was a fascinating idea for an album and he pulled it off brilliantly.

I think it's fine for this person to take the attitude he does as long as it's consistent -- as long as it isn't just artists who are expected to provide their services free.

If this fellow is opening his electricity bills and saying "Feeling the pinch, Washington Gas Energy Services?" or buying his coffee with "Feeling the pinch, Starbucks?" I'm fine with it.

i just returned from our summer holiday in portugal, a voluntary 3 week renouncement of computer/internet/modern media access, and among my first clicks was a visit to click opera to get this great insight to your early works... wow!
what more can we expect to come out of those legendary lost boxes from NY? the »thank you party people« song from the early nineties? those tracks that were announced for the canceled Le Grand Magistery EP »Sports Pierrot«? a »Ping Pong« demo called »sausage machine«? a secret duet with Bobby Gillespie covering the Stooges? definitely, more »songs in soft pencil«, p l e a s e !
see you at the smart deli/TAKEN party?

There's really only one more cassette podcast I want to do, which is a tape of really early (end of 70s) stuff called Innermost Thoughts.

Sports Pierrot etc is on DAT, and although I have the tapes I don't have a DAT player at the moment. Thank You Party People is on videotape, so it's dubbable. Not sure what Sausage Machine was -- you're just showing off now, Eric!

heh heh heh!
so, you really don't remember "Sausage Machine"?
you know, i have the total hot shot fan knowledge of every Momus song.
even of those that you try so hard to forget...
like the legendary "Oswald Curling Master", "Scottish Body Hair" or the glorious "I was a Fashion Muslim in the Kebab Industry".

i guess i should come along with my old DAT recorder.
à bientôt!

Hi Nick.
This is very generous of you. Look forward to listening these new songs. Some people posting here are so cynical, very few artists would be willing to share their demos for free, especially unreleased songs.

What is a fair price in exchange for the demos posted ? I know there is no obligation, but it seems to be fair to me as aside from the music, I get a lot out of Click Opera.
Richard

PS. I also appeciated the Josef K, a post-punk favourite.

Fascinating stuff, many thanks for putting it on.
I would be interested in purchasing these recordings, would there any possibility of doing a Slender Sherbet on them?

I've always wanted to do an album that would steal David Critchley's title Pieces I Never Did (http://imomus.livejournal.com/69773.html). But the demos have a rough charm of their own, it would seem a shame to polish them.

Subscription CDs?

It might be possible to produce a limited run of subscriber-only CDs, for those who pay an annual fee. This isn't a new idea, but it keeps the money rolling in and gives the subscribers a warm feeling and some extra goodies.

Is there a non-German paypal account into which I can deposit a donation? I love, Love, LOVE the two demos and I want to donate (and thus encourage you to post more), but since I don't read German I'm not clear on what I need to do.

Oh, and if there's not an English version, I'll just run it through babelfish and find a Euro to dollars converter.

Does it only display in German? Weird! I don't think that's something I can control, though.

The dollars to euro translation is handled automatically, and my account can receive both.
