[livejournal.com profile] kineticfactory has posted two videos from the Momus show at La Flèche d'Or, Paris, on Friday night:

[Error: unknown template video]
Pierrot Lunaire (Oskar Tennis Champion album, 2002)

[Error: unknown template video]
Nervous Heartbeat (Ocky Milk album, 2006)

Thanks to Andrew, who made the vids, and Samantha Crü (aka Laila France) for setting up the show.

Cool. I'm not really familiar with your music, which is funny cause I read your blog alot. It's good. I wish I'd been able to check out your show at Tonic last time you were round.

Keep it up.

My immediate reaction - after about 10 seconds - is "your trousers are see through". I shall now digest the performance properly.

Oh, the Nervous Heartbeat video gave me a goose skin. The way you're saluting at the chorus, like a love boat captain honourably sinking with his ship. (Sorry for using a Pearl Jam image!)

Thanks for sharing, kineticfactory!

Wasn't Billy Mackenzie the love boat captain honourably sinking with his ship?
Maybe we all saw Bowie's Stage tour.

See-through trousers and Pearl Jam?

You sir are singularly remarkable in the pop pantheon, I don't quite know why you bother channeling your energies into the ephemeral pub talk that is blogging when what you can do with the pop music medium transcends this other primary diversion.
Your blog is provocative and interesting - one of the very few that I take time to read - but the recent retrospective feature was indicative of the disposability of those words in the ether of computer storage, bloggers prefer a turd of the moment rather than all the gems of the past.
The creation of uniquely inventive, intelligent pop music is what Momus excels at. Surely the vague tangential response that historically constitutes much of the comment line response to your music must merit the question, why bother with expending time blogging for an audience whose reaction to your music is so often oblique indifference?

You should audition for Hedwig, straightaway.

Ah well, I knew I shouldn't have dropped the bad band's name..
To make it a bit clearer, I wasn't thinking of Pearl Jam, but had the image of a "love boat captain sinking with his ship" puffing up in my head when I saw him saluting. It's just that "Love Boat Captain" is one of two Pearl Jam songs I know, and thought I'd credit them with the term (I even excused myself for dropping their name!).
I came to this blog via Momus' music and enjoy both very much.
Indifference is not how I react to his music. Quite the opposite.

The problem with the older blog entries is that it's
a) difficult to find them other than scrolling through the days
b) made difficult to keep track of the comments.

That observation was not aimed at you specifically Robert, in fact I rather liked your "Love Boat" related image, reminded me of a late eighties Larson cartoon which featured the Love Boat straying into the Straits of Hormuz.
I do prefer Momus music over his blog, his records have been holding shelf space with me for two decades and rather than succumbing to a late career dip of just chucking out another formulaic collection of songs he still can create a record as surprising and splendid as Ocky Milk.
He has certainly surpassed the majority of his own music heroes on the route from Circus Maximus to Ocky Milk.
What I wrote was more an comment on the evanescense of blogging and a frustration with the degree to which Momus music is undervalued, sometimes - in a relative way - by himself.

Hello John!

Sure, on the records these songs are indeed awesome thanks to you. But, for the record -- or do I mean not for the record? -- the two live backings heard here are the pre-Flesh versions.

Why can't this generation shut up?

The reason I've stopped going to shows in the last five years is perfectly illustrated by these videos. It is now considered normal to talk throughout a live performance. Loudly.

Oh, are they? All truth told I didn't actually watch them as I was scared away by talk of your see-thru trousers. I have known you all too long to watch you sing infront of bright lights with transparent pants on Nick; unless of course I am performing with you and have no choice. BESIDES: I was simply being cheeky with that comment.
love,
John F.F.

This irritated me greatly, too; I found it very disrespectful and dismissive, and I failed to watch them in their entireity because I started getting a little angry on Nick's behalf.

Of course, not all music venues need be twee little recitals, but I do think the audience's etiquette should be sympathetic to the artist's aesthetic--to help the artist create an atmosphere. But then, are people even capable of picking up on this symbiosis now? ADHD-addled little twits, this lot.

nice
