Since my own music performances in the US have become a bit of a rarity, it's with some excitement that I'd like to announce that my one and only American show this year will be a joint bill with someone who performs even more rarely: Yximalloo.

We're in concert at Joe's Pub (the Joseph Papp Public Theater on Lafayette Street) on Wednesday October 10th 2007 at 11pm. Tickets are priced at $12, and since capacity at Joe's is only 180 or so, I'd strongly advise you to book in advance.

"Like a Japanese Jandek without the angst, like The Boredoms minus the bombast," is how Other Music -- one of Yximalloo's few champions, along with radio station WFMU -- describe Naofumi Ishimaru, born on the island of Kyushu 52 years ago. He prefers "kitsch shaman". The Jandek parallel is underscored by the fact that, after years of legendary obscurity, Yximalloo too has decided to start making live concert appearances again. "I finally start to play gig more than 2 decades silence," Yximalloo reports from Ireland, where he's currently living. "What did I do in my 52 years. Music? Yes, I was a musician. So I started to play a gig since last August."

Audiences who witness these rare shows will see a one-man tribe hammering out "melodies gathered from some imaginary South Sea island where the traditional instrument is seemingly an old '80s synth". Some will be reminded of Harry Partch, others of Half Japanese -- Yximalloo has collaborated with Jad Fair, who also designed the scrawly, day-glo sleeves for his "Worst Of" CD series. Ultimately, Yximalloo is perhaps the Robinson Crusoe of arty postpunk lo-fi, stranded on a beautiful desert island, still fighting some of avant pop's most exciting battles. Let's hope the message in a bottle telling him those battles are long over (and originality lost) never reaches him.

Here's an account of my meeting with Yximalloo, in Tokyo back in July 2001.

Thanks to Mikey IQ Jones and Bill Bragin for setting this show up!

And meanwhile, don't forget that you can see me live in Paris this Friday night, at a late show at the Fleche D'Or featuring sets from Kumisolo and Laila France.

This is one of the many reasons I'm glad I live in nyc. Well, this and getting to se Kiiiiiii a few months ago at the Cakeshop. I swear I'm going to marry them both!

Momus, I checked the calender on the website, and unfortunately, they still have Country Joe McDonald listed that night. Eeeeek.

They do an early show and a late show. He's the early show, we're the late show. Starting at 11pm. They'll no doubt update their web calendar very soon.

If they don't... should I organize a mob and head over there with pitchforks and copies of monocle magazine??

Hmmm... I think that can be arranged.

As long as you'll let me customize the uniform a bit, with Nara t-shirts. Long live public discourse!! Hahaha.

Have no fear, the folks at Joe's are putting together the writeup for the calendar this very minute! They needed some links to Nick's website and such first. I'm hoping that everything will be up by tonite.

I am definitely in full support of monocles and pitchforks at the show, though.

In some of your recent posts, you've expressed a little bit of concern about how you're going to make money post-wired. Money aside, you'd sure make a lot of little people very happy with a US tour.
And if you wanted to stop by, say, Chicago.
And if you wanted to play at a little gospel-church-turned-art-gallery like South Union Arts, http://www.southunionarts.com/ and I just happened to know most of the people working there.
Then could you maybe oh maybe just maybe poke your head in the door and give us a cheery wave?

Unfortunately we'll be in NYC in July, and then moving back to Japan the first week of August, and won't be able to make the show. Sounds very cool though, great venue and neighborhood.

Also, I'd say it's an honor to be playing after Country Joe McDonald, what with the legendary place he and his band occupy in hippie history in America, "Fixin' to Die Rag," etc.--groovy, indeed.

Seriously, you should consider breaking into his song at some point in the show, just for goofs....

"And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for? Don't ask me I don't give a fuck,
next stop is...Kirkuk...??!!"

...Whoopie, we're all gonna die!

Glad you're back and blogging with new material--hope it doesn't impede your writing too much though. Also, do you know why we haven't heard from Alin Huma for so long? Is he back in Japan? His last posting was weeks ago...

He's currently on Greek beaches with his family. Is coming back to pick up a bunch of luggage he left at our place, then heading home to Japan soonish.

Thank you for this peek at Xyimalloo. I am anxious to dig deeper into his catalogue.

Do you think you could be moved to play a Washington US date sometime in the next couple of years? I'd like that.

I've always thought that look you were perpetrating in the early 00's was rather chic.

Somehow I imagine Kenny having a hand in this gig...might have to go.

I don't think Kenny had a hand in it, but it would be lovely to see him and you there!
