The latest Momus mp3 is Corkscrew King.

Sorry, this track is no longer available. Please buy the CD when it comes out!

It's a song about impotence. Now, impotence is a serious affliction, but it's slightly less serious when it affects a spoiled old feudal lord who practises 'sekuhara' (sexual harrassment) on his courtly ladies and concubines. It's less serious when you're both an idiot and a famous comedy character. This song runs together Ken Shimura's Bakatono and Henna Ojiisan roles and mixes the resulting Frankenstein's monster with the poet W.B. Yeats, who believed potency and creativity were closely linked and, in old age, had a Steinach operation to revitalize his failing virility. He also got tight with a guru called Mr Swami who taught him about tantric sex in Majorca: "The Yogi, dressed in bright pink and looking like a bright carnation, sat with his hands folded on his ample paunch."

If you're one of the people who helped me brainstorm this song yesterday, it's yours for free. Otherwise, it's a dollar. Cheaper than Viagra! (Not necessarily guaranteed to make you hard, though.)

Corkscrew King

Bakatono bakemono henna ojisan
Gamushara sekuhara henna ojisan

The king is in the winter, in the winter of his prime
Welcome to the kingdom of the Corkscrew King
See him pour a jet of wine across a concubine
See him try in vain to plunge the corkscrew in

See him eat sashimi from a naked woman's breast
See him drink wakame sake from her sex
Send in all the dancing girls and send in all the wine
He's impotent, omnipotent, and only 69

Send in Dr Mojo who can turn back time
Send in more Viagra to halt the decline
When you're 69 the sky is overcast
The castle flag is flying... half mast
The gate is shut, the canon blocked
The flower they fire at one o'clock half-cocked
The tower flops, the blossom drops
The king will play the shamisen

Bakatono bakemono henna ojisan
Gamushara sekuhara henna ojisan

The Yogi Dr Swami with his hand upon his thing
Guru by appointment to the Corkscrew King
Says 'A badger in the hand is worth a badger in the bush
A badger down your pants, you've got to push push push'

An aged man, the poet says, is but a paltry thing
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless he sing
So clap your hands for every wrinkle in your mortal dress
Join the throng and dance along with the Corkscrew King

Send in Dr Mojo who can turn back time
The castle flag is flying and the weather's fine
But when you're 69 the sky is overcast
The castle flag is flying... half mast
The gate is shut, the canon blocked
The flower they fire at one o'clock half-cocked
The tower flops, the blossom drops
The king will play the shamisen

I'm off to Helsinki now for a sound art festival and performance (details here, along with news of forthcoming Momus shows in Hong Kong and Tokyo), back in a few days!

Hurray! This might be my favorite yet of the recent batch of Momus tunes. Wouldn't it be nice to somehow attach a copy of this to all the billions of fake-Viagra spam messages even now attacking my email and yours? Or how about using this as the soundtrack to a Cialis (spelling?) commercial? Think of the financial rewards! Pecker up, Momus...

A shudder in the loins engenders there
The tower flopped, the blossom dropped,
and a badger in the bush.

Or something like that. Nice work!
Any plans on coming to Canada at any point?

If they ever do try to market a female equivalent to Viagra, I hope they name it Niagara.

Gamushara = recklessly fanatical. It could mean 'hard working'. But what he's working at is 'sekuhara' -- sexual harassment.

Great stuff. I've developed a real fondness for Shoukichi Kina, some enka and matsuri music in general, so I got a real kick out of the style, and the unself-conscious way it was done.

Lyrics are top-notch too, and it's a real treat to see how reader comments influenced the final result.

Hi Nick, This is Momo.
Has anybody already pointed out that Ken Shimura is actually Mote Mote(sexually popular) with young girls around him? He's always spotted with the current hot girl on TV or glamourous model-like beauties,
According to the article I found, it's not only because of his power in the TV industry and money. He's actually an intelligent guy and women are attracted seeing the unexpected difference from his face on TV....
It's just a trivial thing but I just wanted to tell that the song has another twist for Japanese people.
p.s. Summerisle was great! I've got it at Rough Trade yesterday.

you know who where in tko with quick comments on comments.
1. 'kamushara' has an interesting nuance in the following phrases: 'kamushara ni ikiru' which basically means to 'hustle for a living'; 'kamushara ni yaru' 'to go it blind' or 'let rip' which really sets my mind spinning in dark new directions...nice!
2. i agree with the comment about shimura's mote-moteness. in addition to being a lady-killer, he also dresses himself in some of the coolest 'urahara' brands like 'BAPE' and such.
see you when you get to tko,
r.

Wow, the Japanese press (http://music.yahoo.co.jp/rock/music_news/cdjournal/20040421/cdjent004.html) have picked up this song and run with it! 'British Musician Writes Song Inspired By Ken Shimura', says Yahoo, Japan's biggest internet news site. Web translation renders this:

Wed., April 21, 2004

MOMASU announces to "Ken Shimura" the new song by which in SUPAIA was carried out (CD journal)!

'The musician to whom he loves Japan without こよ although there are many musicians called so-called "Japanese 通" is a Japan [ which may not be ] favorite musician "MOMASU." MOMASU that the time which lives in Japan recently also becomes long, and relations are as good as the Dr Suidobashi of That Asakusa Kid, is a person who knows Japan well, so that it makes it think that it may be detailed to Japan more than a Japanese, when it carries out by accident. Such MOMASU considered what, or seemingly has made the new song by which inspire was carried out to that "Ken Shimura", and has announced to an own blog page the new song!

This music entitled "Corkscrew King" -- the portion of rust -- it is -- Mr. ♪ BAKA, BAKEMONO, HEN, in addition Mr. じ Music [ say / that he himself has sung in Japanese according to the rhythm of むしゃ et al., sexual harassment, HEN, in addition a Mr. / Mr. / Mr. / - and ] and a leading tone ] truly appropriate for MOMASU broken strangely / idea /. Purposely, on this page, since "Mr. BAKA" is introduced with "the HARENCHI king who jumps about with a naked woman" and "HEN, in addition Mr. じ" are introduced with "the lascivious father who does not show shame", somehow, 詞 of MOMASU of this music spread when receiving great in SUPAIA in Ken Shimura's "lascivious portion" is also lascivious, and it is unified. However, as for there, also explaining the difficult thing of MOMASU and this music to be it "the music which mixed Ken Shimura, Frankenstein, and W.B. Yeats" etc. is also making the remark which the meaning does not understand to the ordinary man. Since it is the interesting music I want you to surely listen to if it is a Japanese noting that it writes also with the utterance, please also listen to ANATA by all means! If it can do, do I also want Ken Shimura to hear it?'
