Date: 2004-06-04 01:00 am (UTC)Cherry Red didn't feel that the sales of the Toog album we put out justified another French-language release. At the moment both my labels (Analog Baroque, American Patchwork) are just releasing my own records. It costs a lot of money to promote new artists. Karaoke Kalk is an excellent place for Toog.
Whatever happened to your close friendship?
We're as close as ever! He was staying with me here in Berlin two weeks ago, and I'll be staying with him in Paris soon.
Why haven't you collaborated with the brilliant Toog?
I have collaborated with him! I've toured with him, played on his records, put out his records. In fact, so much that it often began to look rather as if he were in my shadow. I think we both feel that he needs to establish his own identity. Also, we're both literary songwriters, and it's good when we collaborate with people who are sound-oriented, rather than people like ourselves.
And, when will his new album be released on Karaoke Kalk?
I'd imagine in about a month. Keep an eye on their website (http://www.karaokekalk.de/).
Have you heard Montage?
To be honest I'm both too close to, and far away from, Kahimi to listen to her new stuff. It would pain me, and I wouldn't be able to be objective. I'm not really interested in the place she's in, trying to make glossy avant pop sandwiched between a management company and a major label. The kind of Japanese music artists I'm interested in just now are the Meeting At Off Site (http://www.japanimprov.com/baraoyama/) people, Takeo Toyama (http://www.takeotoyama.info/english1.html) and Nobukazu Takemura (still). If Takako Minekawa would take time out from the Cornelius baby to make a new record I'd certainly run out and buy it, though.
