I'm hissy-fitting, pissy-ripping mad. Olivier Lamm -- yes, that O.LAMM! -- is flying to Japan very soon to promote his out-this-week new album -- an album on which I, Momus, do a totally sick rap! -- and he hasn't invited me along. In fact, the first thing I hear about it is a piece on Digiki's blog. Digiki's on the bill, so's Lullatone. But am I? No. Why? I don't think it's because of the air fare. I would've gone the Aeroflot route for you, Olivier! No, it's because I'm too old, isn't it?

Or maybe -- YES! -- it's because I'm not as beautiful or talented as Nobuko Hori, who is on the bill, and also on your monolithic album Monolith, right? Nobuko Hori, who joins the tour on 22nd November at Fourth Floor, Kitchijioji and 2nd December at Apple Store, Shibuya, right?



Okay, I'll admit that Nobuko is pretty good at what she does. I can totally see why you've done this, Olivier. Her graphics are super sweet and her music is a fucking gorgeous racket, except when it's really sick and sweet, like Midori Hirano mixed with early Lullatone. Music Related are putting out her album soon, and her artwork for North Valley Subconscious Orchestra is sweet as a nut.

Nobuko, who also plays in a sick, sick band called Groopies with a way hott model called Kyoka (they really rip it up live), has way more friends than me on her MySpace page. But that's only because I don't have a MySpace page. Never go there. Well, hardly ever.

And as for that fucktard Rupert Murdoch trying to break into the Japanese market, well, I'm counting on all sensible Japanese to stick with Mixi, the social networking system with built-in Shinto.

I am actually listening to Monolith at the moment and it is kind of exploding my head. In complete honesty - the Momus rap is pretty excellent. You sound tough and gruff.

it seems to be your destiny to be ignored in japan. take the new studio voice, a 90s special. although it promises a feature on the people around kahimi karie, the actual story has no reference to momus other than a very small print as collaborator on one of the albums.
maybe you've got the wrong attitude. look at marxy he's probably got it right. he'll soon be everywhere.

Also, I think it's worth looking at the way Studio Voice have chosen to approach the 90s in this issue. Seeing it as an era of retro, remix and cut-up, they've asked (http://www.infaspub.co.jp/studio-voice/sv.html):

"If the 90s was all about the redefinition of all cultural territories by sampling and editing, maybe it's worth considering that there was "no there there"!?"

It was, after all, the era when people like Konishi were describing themselves as "editors" rather than musicians. I never did that, though I don't think I was immune to the trend they're describing here; most of my Shibuya-kei work for KK was just rehashed Gainsbourg.

it's interesting, i just picked up the gainsbourg issue of SV and it's actually much older than i thought. 1993. so gainsbourg was already 'programmed in' before the momus/karie work (or am i getting my chronology wrong). actually, of course i jsut remembered my old cd of japanese french chansons from the mid 80s; my theory which i think i mentioned on neomarxisme is that the authentic shibuya-key actually happened in the 80s/bubble

however i like the way this SV doesn't go nostalgic over the 90s and the way it looks at a lot more stuff relevant in japan during the decade than just shibuya-kei.

Momus, I would like to have a serious dialog with you about blog hosts. The thing about myspace, is, well, it's kkiind of like gambling. You can skirt around and check your stats very easily. Like, I go post something I think is clever, then I bump back to my dashboard, and I can see like immediately whether anywone has read it. It's so fun. I'm like a junkie over there now, trying to get famous fast.

Nobuko seems to be a prety good artist, but she still hasn't learned that putting a bunch of random noise together doesn't automatically make one a musician.

There are almost an infinite number of people around that lay claim to musicianship. A large portion of them have no business making such a claim.
