Nick, Hisae, Mario and Sruli mounted a fieldtrip to the Marzahn district of East Berlin yesterday to come up with viable alternatives to the Fashion Goth look. People, there must be some.

First stop on our day of, ahem, urban exploration was the Asia-Center on Meeraner Strasse, out by the Allee der Kosmonauten. Filled with bun and pho soup, we strode boldly into the wholesale units and purchased (retail) some mooncakes and a flowery blue housecoat which Hisae can wear while doing Fashion Housework. Then we admired pink crystals in a mega-Garden Centre and muzzles in a mega-Petstore. After that we poked around an abandoned Russian Culture Centre and an even more abandoned "crankyhouse spa". Finally we regressed to childhood, pedalling a gigantic tricycle around a car park in the grounds of what looked like a horse hospital.

Highlight of the day: getting thrown out of a mega-DIY superstore for looking more like tools than the tools they stocked.

Music: Bauhaus, of course.

Mood: Emotional Communist.

Couldn't you just keep the black clothes, and alter the pretense to your desired size and shape?

The T-shirt says "Electric Last Minute By Cornelius". I like it because it's set in the old Letraset typeface Shatter. The shoes are Birkenstocks, bought from a uniform shop on Karl Marx Allee. The trousers are thick German Navy strides from Humana, and I always wear them with a poncho for the "Dutch Postman" look. The look produces strange reactions in the Germans, though, so maybe they have other associations. A homeless man ran up to me on Warschauer Str. yesterday shouting and gesticulating. It's probably for the best that I had no idea what he was saying.

I was just thinking though (if this came up in the last post, I didn't read all of it and I apologise)... but aren't a lot of fashion goths like the straight edge kids etc really die hard christians? It's pretty weird.

Also, I have dyed almost black hair and a septum piercing, does that alone qualify me for fashion goth status?

Hair-wise, I don't think the "push it all forward" look is doing you any favours, Momus. It is paradoxically emphasising the baldness and putting a few years on you. You'd look far better if you just shaved it all off.

I didn't know that Berlin had good pho. We have a huge Vietnamese community here in the Silicon Valley. I would've starved in college if it weren't for inexpensive Vietnamese sandwiches... and yes, lots of truely excellent bun, pho, and summer rolls (Goi Cuon).

As far as the fashion goth aesthetic, I would argue that it no longer is gothic... it's industrial, primarily. There's nothing flowy or elegant about black shirts and skulls, and even the goth movement embraced color sometimes, so long as it was rich and didn't clash with black.

Most of the old school goths I know are now mostly indistinguishable from neo-pagan high-tech bohemians nowadays. Quasi-hippies who are more likely to worship the goddess than be Christian, more likely to go hottubbing or to a good restaurant than to hang out in a cemetary.

They will occasionally dress up for an event, but they tend to gravitate towards velvet, corsets, and splashes of rich colors. They like having fun. They tend to be as critical of the new generation of mall-driven, black clad angsty teens as anyone else.

Maybe my sense of fashion is undevelopped. I frankly don't see much fashion in your fashion, with a possible exception that your pants are too short. Everyone else looks like they just picked out the first thing they could find which was acceptably clean.

What do you make of this: http://www.last.fm/music/Momus ?

In case you aren't acquaintanted with Audio Scrobbler (or Last.FM as it has recently become), the charts are created by plug-ins on members' PCs, which submit details of all the mp3s they play.

Any surprises in that list?

(You have been by far the most popular artist on my own list (http://www.last.fm/user/artysmokes/) since I joined up about 6 weeks ago, but that's mainly cos I've been skint and downloaded 6 of your albums off soulseek, like a very naughty person.)
