On Monday I fly to Japan. A week in Tokyo followed by six in Hakodate, Hokkaido.

Every trip to Japan is precious to me. The weeks are reeled out to me like a festive ribbon; a delight, an opportunity, a privilege.

I live, wherever I am, in a kind of ersatz Japan, a kind of ex-pat's club, a fan club, a semi-secret society. Tonight, for instance, I ate tonkotsu ramen at Cocolo Ramen, a semi-secret weekends-only 'Japanese eating event' on the Rosa-Luxembourg Strasse, a room transformed into a noodle bar by the simple addition of red lanterns, pump-up tables, and a kitchen that packs away into flight cases. The waitress wore geta and a kimono. She told me this was her last night; next week she'll fly back to Japan and start a new job in Tokyo.

Since I'll just be in Tokyo for a few days at the beginning and end of my Hokkaido stint, I ought to be planning the time carefully. But I expect I'll just follow my nose. The first thing I have to do is take my G4 iBook to the Apple Store at Ginza; the logic board just fried, a mere six months into the machine's life. The next thing I'll do, depending on jet lag, is visit the show Archilab: New experiments in architecture, art and the city, 1950-2005.

I wonder what Topo, the little rabbit we've just added to the Momus household, will look like when I get back at the end of February? I certainly hope he's scattering fewer fecal pellets on the sofa by then.

It's a breed called lowenkopfzwergkaninchen. Actually, we're wondering whether it's a hybrid between a hamster and a rabbit. Researching this, it seems that not only have hamsters been crossed with rabbits, but humans have too (http://www.sweenytod.com/rno/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=667). Scary stuff...

Would be kind of ironic as Jodorowsky (he claims) killed 100 rabbits with his bare hands for that film!

Nick:

A cautionary word about the rabbit if it is living indoors: mind that it stays clear of any carpeting or anything with artificial fibers--they sometimes have a tendency to graze on them. Since they cannot digest the carpet fibers, they can cause a blockage and the rabbit can die.

They occasionally chew wires, too. As long as the rabbit isn't running loose at night, your little charge should be fine.

Always prepared to take advice from the dapper, Whimsy!

El Topo is caged at night. So far no cable or sofa chewing has been observed.

That's true... or mostly white anyway...

Anyway, your bunny looks cute, keep it away from mystical cowboys!

I guess the idea of calling our kaninchen El Topo is that he is the mystical cowboy dressed in black. Any white bunnies that cross his path are mincemeat.

Since we're on topic I had to share this. Here I am with Jodorowsky last year. Image
I'm doing a film with him soon. I think he would be quite flattered you named your bunny after him.

That's an incredibly cute bunny! Do you have any concerts lined up for southern UK in the near future? I've been a fan of yours since early 1990 (so for approximately half my lifetime) but have still never managed to catch you live. It'd make me very happy to do so...

we had a bunny named Taylor for a while, and then he fled to the wilds of the meadows (Las Vegas).
i think it is very charming that rabbits leave around inoffensive "pellets" that are not that gross and easily cleaned up. if any animal was going to have cute feces, it would be bunny rabbits.

We used to have a white rabbit. Be sure s/he (are you sure which?) gets plenty of petting every day. I've heard that they can get sick if they don't receive enough physical contact.

Thanks for the heads-up Nick. That exhibit looks great! I'll be in Tokyo all next week, and I'm sure to take it in. Should be a fun week; this is my first return to Japan since our album was released there.

Last time I was in Tokyo, the Mori was closed. I went up to the top of Roppongi Hills anyway, only to discover that all the revolving doors were verboten due to a tragic accident. So I was unfortunately able to appreciate neither the art nor the fresh air. Admittedly, I didn't suffer any tragic accidents.

Looking forward to getting back to Tokyo!

it must be your girlfriend's idea to get that rabbit, it seems you're getting co-dependent, keep your individuality, don't give into the comfort of relationship, it will be the death of your art, and what the fuck is sweet about a stupid animal that shits all over the place?
