You can leave a society, but not step outside society. For a start, your socialisation and the structuration of your thought by the language and the concepts you've learned stamps society's values and framings right through your every thought.

I recently did an entry on the Unabomber's library (http://imomus.livejournal.com/499248.html). Now, Ted K might be most people's idea of an extreme withdrawal from society. And yet I'd argue that American social ideas, from Thoreau to the eco movement, totally structure his "rebellion". He is absolutely not outside of American culture, sitting there with his library books in his log cabin, sending his bombs to people he doesn't like and scribbling at his writings.
