Mysterious performance unit Penquo!
Aug. 22nd, 2009 01:18 pmFor weeks now there have been regular meetings at a certain house -- all right, at my house -- in which strange rituals involving plants, piezo mics, turntables, projections of Bob Ross videos and abstract music have been pieced together by two Japanese girls.

Over time it has become clear to me that a sort of secret society called Penquo is taking shape, and I am reliably informed that tonight at Staalplaat Working Space some kind of initial ritual, or performance, or service will take place before members of the public.

Artists' statement: "First act is Penquo, and it will be like a little visual and sound laboratory playing / listening to the sound of very basic object, such as plants, fruits etc, along with some visual materials. We plan to have some images projected on the wall (2 projectors + OHP). It will be about 20 minutes performance, but we’d like the audience to experience the moment with a relaxed feeling like sitting in someone’s living room."

Plus Naoko Ogawa; video projection "Luminous"
Naoko Ogawa is a jewelry artist. For her new jewelry series "Luminous" she made an 8-minute film which will be shown tonight for the first time. Naoko made a frame which allowed her to walk around in the park, cook at home, sit in a cafe and so on while wearing her Luminous jewelry on a white t-shirt and capturing with a video camera the effects of the light as it changed and glanced off the pearled, reflective surface of the jewelry. The jewelry will also be for sale.
The evening will be audio-streamed live, so you can hear what it sounds like even if you aren't in Berlin. Stream here.

Date: 2009-08-22 12:50 pm (UTC)2 tbsp meths
1 tbsp washing up liquid
4 tbsp vinegar
1/2 pint strong tea
(makes two litres)
Another good one:
Make a pot of strong tea, using 4 or 5 tea bags. Add 15 drops of citronella, 10 drops of tee tree oil and 10 drops of white mint (or peppermint).
Or how about:
White wine vinegar, water and any combination of citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, sandalwood or tea tree oils. Mix a few drops of each essential oil into a little washing-up liquid and add to the vinegar and water. Put the resultant mixture into a spray bottle and shake well before using. Variations include the addition of strong, cold tea instead of water, crushed garlic (although this can clog the 'spray' mechanism of the bottle), meths, and Dettol.

=======
Looked up bob Ross, I always saw him in a light of disgust. sort of bored valium fueled lackluster lost feeling.
But in the light of being included in an art project (Penquo)... all of a suddenly bob ross seems fun, weird, and engaging.
=======
Its my sense of responsiblity, momus... I'm not seeing this post pushing anyone else to do it... so I will...
"Every lie creates a parallel world, the world in which it is true."
from your new book...
seems like a similar theme to what Penquo is doing: creating a space where an alternate experience is possible.
In your duty as moth catcher/drink mixer, have you perhaps also being STEALING their ideas?

Date: 2009-08-22 04:26 pm (UTC)"Creating a space where an alternate experience is possible" is just a longer way of spelling out "art", n'est ce pas?
"Art is an alternative editing table for reality and its major political task consists in showing how precarious our so-called “natural” context is. Art can convey doubts about the
dominant social and cultural spheres we live in. It illuminates that there are always alternatives." Nicolas Bourriaud

Date: 2009-08-22 05:13 pm (UTC)Yes, I've noticed I tend to be too wordy... art it is.
how much we've advanced...
To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced, and having evoked it in oneself, then, by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling - this is the activity of art. "What Is Art?" (excerpts) by Leo Tolstoy

Date: 2009-08-23 12:25 am (UTC)Tolstoy's... more of the classical artist type...
"...transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling - this is the activity of art."
sounds a bit fascist these days doesnt it...
