Glasgow show tonight

A wee reminder that if you're in Glasgow, Scotland you can see a double bill tonight at Stereo featuring Momus and Germlin.



It's a smidgen pricey at ten pounds a head, but a wonderful night is guaranteed in one of Glasgow's best live venues (with an excellent restaurant on the ground floor). First Germlin will play a set from his new THRASHR album, then the 48 year-old will join the 24 year-old onstage and they'll perform 20 minutes of their collaborative JOEMUS album, due in the fall. After that Momus will snap into his retro-revue format and perform one song from each of his 18 studio albums. Early indications are that various members of legendary Glasgow bands like BMX Bandits, The Pastels, Belle and Sebastian and even perhaps Del Amitri will be in the audience, mingling with the young Germlin generation, so it's likely to be a rare meeting of Scotland's musical tribes, generations and genres. I'll raise a dram to that, damn it!

The Glasgow Show (http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Parks_Outdoors/theglasgowshow2008zones.htm) is only £3 and they've got The Drifters and Drakes of Hazard (not Sunday).

Are you worried about "due in" or about "the fall" (for autumn)? "Due in" is good Victorian English; "fall" (for autumn) is rare in England but frequent in Scotland, whence the American usage derives.

Where did you hear that? In my 28 years in Scotland I never heard anyone use "fall" to mean "autumn".

"Fall" is what people in England called autumn back in the 1600s and settlers to America brought that word with them. "Weird Americanisms" are usually just older forms of English, mostly from the 17th century. People use autumn in the US frequently, too ... nothing wrong with having variety in the language.

Mind you, I was as well until I saw the awesome Sparks perform their twenty one albums over a month in London.

I didn't see them all, but I went to all the good ones.

I've been put off live music attendance because of exorbitant (and opportunistic) ticket prices charged by both promoters and artists for performances over here.
Appearances by both Sylvian and Kraftwerk proved too much for my pocket.
Ten quid has to the cheapest price I've seen for a gig in years - particularly so for Momus and Germlin!

That's nothing, I hate it when people say 'issues' when they really mean 'problems', sounds like some corporate-doublespeak, hiding an unpleasant reality with a less 'threatening' word.

Yes I was there and it was wonderful! Germlin played solo for about 20mins then he and Nick played together some demo tracks from their forthcoming collaboration album. Joe is heading over to Berlin for 6 weeks to work on these.

We were then treated to a history of Momus through the years, including many of my own favourites which i never thought I would hear live :) This is my attempt at a track listing, I may have got some in the wrong order so Nick will say if I got anything wrong. Someone (Joe's girlfriend?) filmed a lot with a digital video cam - would be great to see that footage!

Just to say (and agreeing that it's not so important), there are at least three unambiguous references in the OED citation, and if you go to books.google.com and enter "spring and fall" plus scotland you'll find scores of examples of fall meaning autumn in Scottish sources. I think it matters because it matters to the interpretation of poetry, especially everywhere in the UK -- fall of the year, fall of humanity, fall of Hyperion (written at the same time as "To Autumn"), u.s.w.

Yes, that was me taking the video. Once I get some time I will edit and upload the footage - we're moving flat just now so it might be a while. I have a couple of tracks from each set though and it all seems to have come out well!
