How much can you glean about a foreign city by walking around before the shops are open, taking pictures through windows?

Welcome to Copenhagen, where you see, from top to bottom, a Vesterbro live-work space, some junkstore pots, an Islamic travel agency, a Thai health spa, a furniture shop, a black hairdresser, a Thai-Chinese supermarket, a fabric store, a vegetarian restaurant, a kids' clothes shop, an electronics store with a sale ("slutspurt") on, and the Henrik Vibskov shop (with Vik Prjónsdóttir's sealpelt visible).

From this brief walkabout, I got the impression that Copenhagen was like Berlin, but with prettier girls, more Thai restaurants, and a bunch of bawling imbecile drunks for whom Sunday morning is just a brighter, later Saturday night.

In Danish, "slutspurt" means final run, last big push, end of sale.

As for the Spunk Bar, I really didn't want to go in and drink anything, so I can't tell you what that's about.

Speaking of fluids, there was also some big gable-end celebration of "delicious milk" going on:

Hard to imagine that on an American building!

You should have seen the backlash when there was a billboard in my town advertising a casino with a woman in a shiny, metallic gold bikini. Everyone was outraged, but I just laughed at everyone getting so upset by it when it could be so much worse. I'm sure if the "delicious milk" advertisement was put up in my town, it would be all over the local news.

Although the scenery around the advertisement (and the juxtaposition of the huge ad compared to the classic looking architecture it's on) reminds me a lot of downtown LA, except the ads I'm thinking of are usually for symphonies.

I don't think it's an ad, it's just a community mural singing the praises of milk -- and having lots of babies. And going nude.

No, I take that back, the world does not need more babies. Or babies from me, anyway. I would rather not see another person suffer from having my genes.

On the Cost of living league table of world cities (http://www.finfacts.ie/costofliving.htm), Copenhagen is at 6 and Berlin at 45. So yes, approximately.

My last and best impression of Danes happened on the flight from Copenhagen to Brussels. We sat across the aisle from a completely Nordic-looking woman and her two blonde-haired, blue-eyed sons. I watched in fascination as the mother first produced three identical prepackaged sushi trays, which she distributed. Then, after her sons' Danish tummies had been sated, she produced two identical Lego sets, which the sons dutifully completed in almost exact synchronicity with the end of the flight--the mother, meanwhile, read a copy of a beauty magazine. I marvelled at her precision.

These photos tell us an awful lot about the Momus aesthetic but almost nothing about Copenhagen. Similar shots could have been taken in just about any European city.

As much as I admire their design, beautiful capital and general niceness to people (as long as you agree with them) there ain't no getting around that Danes are smug drunk racists.

Meh. That's true of most groups. Change *drunk* to whatever a culture's preferred form of intoxication is, be it caffeine, prayer, or kava kava. And swap out *racist* for sexist, ageist, or any other intolerance you can come up with. Most groups you're not a member of, world wide, are fine, as long as you agree with them. Or appear to. It's probably just a knee-jerk, evolutionary response to the potential threat of the *other*.

It's cute when your stern Protestant background comes out and grumbles at the kids on the lawn for a bit.

I just flew into Copenhagen and was walking around the same day. I may have seen one or two of these windows (the hair style ad looks familiar). Tourist pictures are dull and predictable but this was an interesting set of choices, and timely too (for me).
