Talking with Americans about the future

imomusI've just arrived in New York, which feels particularly intense, brash, noisy, paranoid and crazy after Berlin. On the streets everybody seems garish, heightened, mannered, neurotic, driven. I'm here at the invitation of various American institutions, mostly to do talks and brainstorming about the future.
On Thursday I take the train to Boston to talk to the ICA there about "what new is":

Designer Eye: Momus
Blurb: "Designers choose their five favorite pieces in "Design Life Now" -- come find out what and why. Afterwards, head to the Water Café to sample the featured designer’s drink of choice. Momus is a Scottish-born artist, musician and designer who writes for Wired, Metropolis, ID, AIGA voice and his own blog Click Opera. Momus participated in the 2006 Whitney Biennial as an “unreliable tour guide.” Admission is free. Space is limited. Free tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis at the admissions desk one hour before the program."
On Wednesday the 10th I'm back in New York for a popular music concert at Joe's Pub on Lafayette Street with Yximalloo:

Then on October 12th I'm in Denver, Colorado giving a 20-minute talk to the AIGA: NEXT conference on "the future of texture".

Blurb: "Momus asks whether the ongoing digitization of culture is going to result in a net reduction, in the coming years, in the varieties of texture. Can clever interface design replace the real world textures which digital culture is replacing? Will we be able to transmit smells over the internet, and will that lead to new branches of design ("smell design") which we'll be able to specify much more exactly than we could before? And what of "the post-bit atom", the reactionary return to—and perhaps fetishization of—the real world phenomena that prove impossible to digitize successfully?"
After that I fly to London, where I'm brainstorming with The Institute for the Future of the Book about the future of libraries on October 16th and 17th before heading to Paris for Toog and Flo's wedding. Oh, and there are two Momus shows in Brussels on October 22nd and 23rd, more details soon. Phew!
