End of an earner

imomusI'm sitting in Tokyo, having a virtual walkabout on the streets of New York thanks to the amazing Google Maps Street View.
Google Street View is pretty addictive -- you can walk around for hours. But you can't smell anything, or go into any shops, or eat a dumpling, or say hi to someone you know (is that Zach Feuer standing outside his gallery?). Some streets are mysteriously inaccessible -- Thompson Street south of Spring, or the block of Madison where the Whitney stands.
Street View is the kind of thing I would normally have considered dashing off 800 words of taut, poetic prose about for my Wired News column -- but I've just been told that the next one (street views of Tokyo, in fact -- it's a bunch of photos) will be the last! The column is to perish!
Oh well, two years isn't bad for an indulgence of that sort, I suppose. I shall have to go back to being plain old Momus and earning my money by artistic accomplishments (like playing a few more live shows -- I've got them upcoming in Paris, Athens and South Korea, as well as speaking engagements in Colorado, Boston and Luxembourg). Still, it's the end of a nice little earner.
