13th impressions of Tokyo
May. 19th, 2007 11:17 amIt's Saturday morning, grey and humid, and I'm in Tokyo!
Someone on the Air France flight from Paris said "Hi Momus, I read Click Opera, I'll leave a comment there later!" So leave a comment, whoever you were!

Alin's apartment is tiny, but because I was imagining it tinier, it actually felt big. Well, big-tiny. The Nakagin Capsule Building is right next door, and the Dentsu advertising agency right across the road.
On the train from the airport I scribbled the following "first impressions", but actually they're 13th impressions because this is my 13th trip here.
elegant and uptight and introverted
the advanced sickness
oppressively conformist
twee and sentimental
outrageously sexy
the big nellie foreigners -- you hate them because you see the most dreaded reflection of yourself in them
I need to get some more elegant reflections on Tokyo down on paper, because I'm writing something for Hitotoki.org, a new literary site of travellers' impressions of Japan from the creators of Tokyo Art Beat.
Off to see Gutevolk at Tokyo Midtown later, then catch Fumiko Imano for a drink or something. At which point jet lag will probably knock heavily at the door of my 13th heaven and say "Momus, GO TO BED!"
