An uncanny transformer
Apr. 11th, 2007 12:29 amAnyone who knows the University of St Andrews will have suspected at some point that there's a fiendish machine on campus that takes quiet, intelligent, pointy-faced Scottish students and turns them into brash, stupid, green-booted, rich and obnoxious Engiish poshos called Toby and Jemima who loudly describe helicopter holidays in Mustique with minor royalty while you're trying to read Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" in the student canteen.
In fact, the frighteningly-named Perception Laboratory in the St Andrews School of Computer Science does turn out to have just such a machine, but there's no setting for green wellies. Instead, you can become East Asian, West Asian, Afro-Caribbean, a Modigliani painting, an El Greco, a baby or an ape. Just upload a photo and get to work. At least an hour of your life will be wasted, but you will laugh heartily, I promise, and that'll extend your lifespan by three to four months.
Apart from embracing my negritude, I morphed into a dazzling array of characters, none of whom actually were me, but all of whom extended me in ways that were uncannily recognizable. What was it Wire used to sing, "I've got forty versions all dying to get the part..."?
(If you find an interesting alter ego, give us a laugh, post a picture.)
