I think this is partly the tragedy of "the narcissism of minor difference" Freud talked about; the syndrome by which we tend to hate most the people who are only slightly different from us. This explains why middle class and working class don't get on, whereas working class can bond with the elite, even when their objective interests are worlds apart. It also explains why left wing movements are so often riven with schisms and splits.
