i think one of the most interesting artists around today in terms of social commentary is the lovely harrell fletcher ( i think a whitney artist from 2004?). in fact, (younger and older) artist from the pacific northwest seem to be increasingly motivated towards a socially or environmentally conscious direction which i personally find both inspiring and interesting. harrell is the kitchen's summer institute director this summer... o AND the PDX filmfestival is coming up at the end of april for filmy examples of work with a conscience...
