Well, I've been punished for telling you what dolts DJs are yesterday: like a donkey-hater who wakes up to find malicious gods have given him donkey ears, I've woken up, the morning after DJing at Dense, to find myself a kind of perma-DJ in my own house. Right now, for instance, I'm filling the flat with the very lovely ambient sounds of the town of Porto, thanks to Alejandra and Aeron. Well, thanks to them, to my friend Eric, who gave me their "Porto" CD, and some new hard and software.

Yesterday I bought one of those Apple AirTunes thingies (wifi internet, wireless printing and wireless streaming music all in one) and some Harman Kardon SoundSticks, weird glass bulbs which glow blue in the dark over by my bookshelves. When you plug the AirTunes unit and the sound system together, you can "throw" sound wirelessly from iTunes across the room, or the whole flat. You can have DJ soundsystem clashes with your partner, also beaming in iTunes from her iBook. You become a perma-DJ, and wear large, silly, happy donkey ears like the ones I'm shaking about right now to, well, the sound of hair being clipped.

Alejandra and Aeron's lovely ambient work made me want to listen to my own soundscapes of Porto, recorded earlier this year. But how to do that, when the mp3 plays back in Safari and only iTunes can transmit wirelessly to the SoundSticks? The answer is Airfoil, which allows you to send audio from any application to AirTunes.

Small place, you can almost feel the overused air in it.

indeed, a&a's Porto is a real gem. everyone should get it...
congratulations on the fancy gear!

I was going to comment about the dj thing: a bunch of friends have started a (almost) weekly dj night at a local wine bar, but anyone can dj & neither mixing or headphones are encouraged. sure it may be "pretensious" for a bunch of people to be sitting around pretending to enjoy boredoms/appalachian folk/field recordings/sachiko m/jean-luc godard dialogue/free jazz/cardew etc. all night, but there is something nice about the *social* aspect of all sitting around listening to the same obscure & interesting thing...

funny if your neighbours have the same system :)

How do you like the SoundSticks? I was looking at them a little while ago and I think they might be neat but haven't seen any reviews..

They're better than the JBL Creature speakers they're replacing (cables chewed by rabbit)!

i saw a set of hk soundsticks which had been taken apart and spraypainted on the inside. they looked amazing with the blue light glowing. i think the set would have lookd even more stellar if they were painted with an iridescent or glowing paint. also, i hope you are enjoying your airtunes. i work as a mac tech support girl and i must let you know not to forget to turn on your firewall security feature in system preferences since the increase of mac owners is spawning mac viruses (gasp!)

Do I still have to worry if I'm "an interesting person and morally good in my acts"?

Essential if you have a rabbit, mate. I also got a Bluetooth wireless keyboard, and sat out on the balcony today typing poetry which was faithfully transcribed on a computer inside the house. It was terrible, mind you, but at least the rabbit didn't get it.

I did hear that, if memory capacity continues to condense at the rate it has been, by 2020 all recorded music, by anyone anywhere, will fit onto a laptop. By 2050, let's imagine, all human art, knowledge, music and literature might fit onto a chip given away free with Sugar Puffs. The trick for art won't be 'how do I last forever' but 'how do I disappear'? It may exclusively turn to the neglected sense, touch. There'll be Frot Art and Pre-Fondle-ites.

Isn't the formula that as the value of storage space declines, the value of attention increases?

Or you could try wire covers -- the spiral cable wrap or plastic tubing that you can purchase at any hardware store and slice down the center. It makes cords too bulky for bunnies to chew. If you are interested, you can find more rabbit-proofing ideas for your house at rabbit.org.
